IPI Nigeria calls for withdrawal of vexatious charges against WikkiTimes Publisher, staff

The International Press Institute Nigeria has faulted the arrest, detention and subsequent arraignment before a Magistrate Court in Bauchi of the Publisher of WikkiTimes online newspaper, Haruna Mohammed, and a Reporter, Idris Kamal, by the police in Bauchi.

The journalists claimed they were physically assaulted while being held by operatives of the Nigeria Police.

A statement by the Secretary of the IPI Nigeria, Ahmed I. Shekarau, condemned the practice of using the police by civilians to harass and intimidate journalists, advising that “anyone who is aggrieved by any news item published by WikkiTimes should seek redress in court instead of using the police or other security agents to harass the journalists”.

The body said further that Nigeria’s legal system has made adequate provisions for protection of reputation. “IPI Nigeria demands the withdrawal and discontinuation of the vexatious charges filed against the two journalists with immediate effect,” the statement said. The body also called on the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to call the Bauchi State Police Command to order.…

Serena Williams loses Wimbledon thriller, discusses tennis future

Serena Williams lost in her first singles match in 364 days as 115th-ranked Frenchwoman Harmony Tan outlasted her 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7) in the Wimbledon first round in Williams’ longest match in a decade — 3 hours, 10 minutes.

Williams, a 40-year-old with 23 Grand Slam singles titles, did not say definitively in a press conference afterward whether she plans to continue playing competitive tennis.

Asked if it was likely her last singles match, she said, “That’s a question I can’t answer. Who knows? Who knows where I’ll pop up.”

Asked if she’s OK if this is her last memory at Wimbledon, she said, “Obviously not. You know me. Definitely not.”

Asked if there’s any part of her that wants to play the U.S. Open in two months, she said, “That being the first place I’ve won a Grand Slam [in 1999], is something that’s always super special. … There’s definitely lots of motivation to get better and to play at home.”

Williams followed a rusty first set with a more Serena-like second set, which included a marathon 30-point second game.

She squandered a third-set break of serve but managed to force the 10-point super tiebreak, where she won the first four points, then lost the next four points. Tan went up a mini break at 8-6 in the tiebreak, then served it out.

It was Williams’ first three-hour match since her 2012 French Open first-round loss to another Frenchwoman, Virginie Razzano (which was 3:03). Those are her lone two defeats in completed first-round matches in her Grand Slam career.

Before the tournament, Williams said she was largely motivated to take a wild card into Wimbledon by what happened last year at the All England Club. Last June 29, she tore a hamstring in a first-round match and withdrew, leaving her future in tennis in the air.

“It was always something since the match ended that was always on my mind,” she said Saturday. “So it was a tremendous amount of motivation for that.”

AFRIMA 2022 Entry Submission Portal to close on August 5th

According to the AFRIMA Juror, representing Diaspora Northern America, Hadja Kobele Keita, speaking from Washington DC, United States of America, the award platform would not extend the submission date beyond August 5, 2022.

“It is important that all relevant parties submit their entries on time this year. We are a very thorough and transparent organization; and we have a clear process for the award ceremony every year. Once submission of entries ends, we spend time in judging the materials, before we can derive our final nominations list. We also have a specific time allotted to voting.” She said in the release.

She further revealed that the process will undergo a thorough independent scrutiny to guarantee its credibility. “The entire process is also audited by a firm of international repute, Pricewaterhousecoopers. We do not just wake up and nominate people. AFRIMA 2022 will be held from November 3 – 6 this year. To achieve this, we cannot extend deadlines at this point.” According to AFRIMA, all prospective entries must have been created between August 20, 2021 and August 5, 2022, being the year-in-review for all submissions. Artistes, talent managers, music producers, recording companies/labels, video directors, disc jockeys and other relevant stakeholders can submit their work or submit on behalf of their clients via the official AFRIMA website via AFRIMA website.

Interested parties should note that all submissions must be done in consonance with AFRIMA guidelines, terms and conditions, which are also available on the website.

This year’s edition retains its existing categories, all of which are carefully curated to celebrate the best of talents within the African music scene.

A pre-screening and a main screening process will be carried out, respectively, by a world-class 13-member jury composed of seasoned music experts from across the five regions of Africa and in the diaspora, between August 5 to 16, 2022.

Tyson Fury Responds to Jake Paul About $1M Bet for Tommy Fury Fight

The $1 million bet between Tyson Fury and Jake Paul is apparently on.

Fury responded to Paul’s taunting of him on social media Sunday, saying the YouTuber-turned-boxer will need some new teeth once Tyson’s brother, Tommy, is done with him.

Tommy Fury is set to fight Paul on Aug. 6 at Madison Square Garden. Fury and Paul were originally supposed to go head-to-head last December, but Fury was forced to pull out due to a bacterial chest infection and broken rib. Paul instead fought Tyron Woodley for a second time, knocking out the former UFC welterweight champion in Round 6.

Viewed largely as a joke in the boxing world initially, Paul has become one of the sport’s biggest draws over his five-fight career. He’s earned victories over YouTuber AnEsonGib, former NBA star Nate Robinson and former UFC fighter Ben Askren in addition to his pair of victories over Woodley.

The second Woodley fight was a financial disappointment, thanks in large part to the bout initially being promoted as Paul vs. Fury.

This will be the first time Paul has taken on a professional boxer. Fury is 8-0 in his own boxing career and is coming off a win over Daniel Bocianski in April.

While his younger brother isn’t seen as the next superstar boxer in the family, Tyson Fury is apparently confident enough to put $1 million on the line in support.…

Jake Paul to face Tommy Fury at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 6

Six months after his most recent fight, Jake Paul now knows when he’ll be getting back in the boxing ring.

Taking to social media on Thursday, the social media star-turned-professional boxer announced that he will face Tommy Fury at Madison Square Garden in New York City on August 6.

The 25-year-old Paul had previously been scheduled to face Fury — the younger half-brother of WBC and The Ring heavyweight champion Tyson Fury — last December before Fury pulled out of the fight due to a bacterial chest infection and a broken rib. Instead, Paul faced former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley in a rematch from their fight that took place at Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage Field House last August.

After initially defeating Woodley via split-decision in Cleveland, Paul — a native of Westlake, Ohio — conquered the 40-year-old former MMA star via knockout in a fight that took place in Tampa, Florida.

While Paul has amassed a 5-0 record in professional boxing, his wins have come against athletes who have primarily participated in other sports. In addition to Woodley, he has defeated YouTuber AnEsonGib, former NBA guard Nate Robinson and former MMA star Ben Askren.

In Fury, Paul will be facing his first opponent with an extensive background in professional boxing. Heading into the August fight, Fury lays claim to an 8-0 record, with four wins via knockout and four wins via decision, including a win via unanimous decision over Anthony Taylor in Cleveland on the undercard of the Paul-Woodley fight last summer.

Good, bad, worse: The remarkable emergence of Jesse Rodriguez, Canelo’s ire

Jesse Rodriquez has said repeatedly that his goal is to be a special fighter, not an average one. Well, there’s nothing average about this boxing savant.

The Texan has made the quantum leap from prospect to star as a result of two remarkable performances this year, a decision over Carlos Cuadras in February and a stunning knockout of Srisaket Sor Rungvisai on Saturday in San Antonio, Rodriguez’s hometown.

Cuadras and Sor Rungvisai have been 115-pound stalwarts for a decade. The naturally smaller Rodriguez not only beat them, he dominated them.

How did this unfold?

Luck played a key role. Rodriguez was scheduled to take part in a 108-pound fight on the Cuadras-Sor Rungvisai card on Feb. 5. When Sor Rungvisai pulled out because of illness, Rodriguez agreed to move up two divisions to 115 on five days’ notice and stunned everyone outside his own circle by winning a wide decision and the WBC’s secondary title.

Rodriguez would’ve have been justified had he moved back down weight. Instead, he made the decision to defend his belt against a powerful puncher who has victories over Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman Gonzalez (twice). The result? Rodriguez outclassed him, baffling the Thai star with his elite technical ability and then taking him out in the eighth round.

Sor Rungvisai hadn’t been stopped since his second pro fight, in 2009. Future Hall of Famers Estrada and  Gonzalez couldn’t do that.

I hesitate to anoint Rodriguez (16-0, 11 KOs) the next great thing because he’s had only 16 pro fights and both Cuadras (33) and Sor Rungvisai (35) are beyond their primes. At the same time, he has aced the eye test and won two important fights back to back.

One person who hasn’t been surprised by the events of the past four-plus months is Robert Garcia, Rodriguez’s veteran trainer.

“Look man, we know what Bam is all about, we know his talent,” Garcia said on a Little Giant Boxing video. “… So when they offered us a fight, I never even doubted that we’d be …

Ansaru militant group bans political activities in Kaduna communities

The Ansaru militant group has reportedly banned political activities in some communities in Birnin-Gwari LGA of Kaduna, where its fighters are said to have bases.

This was revealed by the Chairman of Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressives Union, Ishaq Kasai, in a statement on Sunday.

He said the group regularly recruits young residents and marry the young girls.

According to Kasai, Ansaru has banned political activities in many communities in the eastern part of Birnin-Gwari LGA. He said in the statement: “In fact, the group continues to gain acceptance from many members of the communities, particularly in old Kuyello and Damari communities in Kazage Ward.

The Ansaru and the recruits are of the belief that their numerical strength will help them to bring the present democratic government down.

“Presently the Ansaru are going round  distributing memory cards to the locals which contains their beliefs and doctrine.

“A disturbing scenario is where the group banned all political activities in many communities such as Damari of Kazage Ward.

“Politicians from these communities have to go far away secretly to the neighboring communities before they hold political meetings.

“For instance, this week an Okada rider who lives in Unguwar Makera of Kazage Ward was seen with a sticker of one of the candidates vying for the Kaduna State House of Assembly and he was thoroughly beaten by the Ansaru.”

“People in these communities are now disenchanted and frustrated about participating in political activities.

“We don’t know how the coming elections will take place in those areas because even the last Local Government election in Kaduna state did not hold in those communities due to the escalating insecurity.

“In short, the Ansaru are now in charge of many of the communities in the area and the group is expanding its occupation.

“The terrorists now call the shots and determine what is to be done in the villages they are dominating.”…

Charly Boy says Peter Obi’s candidacy has activated something unusual in Nigeria

Peter Obi is running for the office of president of Nigeria under the Labour Party.

The music star made this known via his Twitter page on Friday, June 24, 2022.

“I am smelling a “bloodless coup” in the making by ordinary Nigerians to retrieve their stolen future. Peter Obi may or may not become our President at the end of the day, but his presence has activated something unusual in our history and ordinary Nigerians. Wetin u think?” he tweeted.

The former governor of Anambra state’s candidacy has been greeted with a loud ovation by several celebrities across the country.

It would be recalled that about a week ago, veteran comedian, Okey Bakassi mocked those who criticised his trip to Egypt. “Peter Obi critics are angry he went to Egypt for serious business instead of medical checkup in London,” he tweeted.

Since the election season began, several Nigerian celebrities have been vocal about not just their choices but also about citizens’ participation in the forthcoming elections.

“I have just instructed my security and my management that No one is allowed to visit my house or my office without showing their PVC!” Peter Okoye of PSquare tweeted.

Okoye and some of his colleagues have been at the forefront of voters registration ahead of the 2023 general elections.

These celebrities have stood their ground about Nigeria getting it right in the next elections.

Some of these celebrities have even vowed to call out their colleagues who collect money from politicians to campaign for them.

While for some like Okon Lagos, they will be selling their votes to the highest bidder.

Governor-elect promises full recognition of traditional rulers

Ekiti State Governor-elect, Biodun Oyebanji, has promised that his administration would give adequate recognition and respect to traditional institutions in the state.

Oyebanji made the pledge when he led some Ekiti leaders of the APC on a ‘thank you’ visit to the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe in his palace in Ado-Ekiti.

He said the visit was to express appreciation to the Ewi and other traditional rulers for their support and the fatherly role they played prior to the election, especially in averting crises.

Oyebanji particularly described Adejugbe as “a father who has always shown interest in his career trajectory since their first meeting in the 1990s during the agitation for creation of Ekiti State. ”The traditional institution is an important stakeholder in Ekiti that should not be toyed with by anybody. The institution would be strengthened under me”.

Oyebanji said the visit was to appreciate the royal father for his support for him over the years.

“At a time when most elders would have dismissed a young man like me, Oba Adejugbe embraced me with both hands and gave me an opportunity to fly.

“That singular opportunity equipped me very well and prepared me for the other roles I played in Ekiti.

“Beyond his position as a traditional ruler, Oba Adejugbe put all he had into the struggle for the creation of Ekiti State for us to get the expected result. Again, thank you Kabiyesi.

“Also, I want to use our father as a contact point to other traditional rulers for their stabilizing roles during the campaign to make sure the election was conducted without any crises in our dear state.

“Even though there would still be other avenues to meet the traditional rulers to show appreciation, today’s meeting is necessary as a mark of honour for the traditional institution,” he said.

Oyebanji assured Adejugbe, the Ewi-in-Council and the market women of good governance that would transform Ekiti State.

“I appreciate all for trusting me with their votes on Saturday and I stand here today, assuring Ekiti people …

Breaking: Supreme Court dismisses Buhari’s request to alter amended Electoral Act

The Supreme Court has struck out the suit by President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami seeking to void the provision of Section 84(12) of the amended Electoral Act 2022.

A seven-member panel of the apex court, headed by Justice Musa Dattijo Mohammed, was unanimous in holding in its ruling Friday that Buhari, having participated in the making of the law by assenting to it, could not turn around to fault its provisions.

The court, which upheld the objections raised by the National Assembly (NASS) and other defendants against the suit, declined to determine it on the merit but declared that the Supreme Court lacked the jurisdiction to hear it and that the suit was an abuse of court process.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, in the lead judgment, held that it was an attack on the democratic principle of Separation of Powers for the President to seek to direct/request the Legislature to make a particular law or alter any law. The jurists held: “The President lacks the power to direct the National Assembly to amend or enact an act that violates the principle of separation of powers. “There is no part of the Constitution that makes the exercise of legislative powers subject to the directive of the President”.…

Serena Williams to begin Wimbledon against 113th-ranked foe

Serena Williams will begin her Wimbledon comeback by facing Harmony Tan, a 24-year-old from France who is ranked 113th and owns a 2-6 career record in Grand Slam matches. The placement of Williams in the women’s bracket was the most anticipated aspect of Friday’s draw at the All England Club. She is making her first appearance in singles at any tournament since she hurt her right leg and stopped playing during the first set of her first-round match at Centre Court a year ago. Because of her lack of activity over the past 12 months, Williams — who has been No. 1 in the rankings — is outside the WTA’s top 1,200 this week and so could have ended up anywhere in the field and against any opponent in the first round. She only returned to the tour this week by playing two doubles matches at a tune up event in England. While the 40-year-old American’s track record would merit a seeding, the All England Club now adheres strictly to the rankings in determining how it seeds players. Williams has won seven Wimbledon championships, part of her total of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, a record for the professional era. Tan, meanwhile, will be making her debut at the grass-court tournament. If Williams gets past Tan, next up could be a match against Sara Sorribes Tormo, who is seeded 32nd but has never been past the second round at the All England Club or the third round at any major in 19 past appearances. The third round potentially would put Williams against a tougher test: No. 6-seeded Karolina Pliskova, who was the runner-up to Ash Barty last year at Wimbledon and also reached the final of the 2016 U.S. Open — beating Williams in the semifinals there. Barty retired at age 25 in March and so is not defending her title when play begins on Monday. That also leaves open the question of which woman will have the honor of playing the first match at Centre Court on Tuesday, a …

NEWCASTLE SIGNS GOALKEEPER NICK POPE FROM BURNLEY

Newcastle signed goalkeeper Nick Pope to a four-year contract after the England international completed a move from relegated Burnley on Thursday.

The Premier League club paid a fee reported to be 10 million pounds ($12.3 million) for Pope, who made 141 league appearances in his six seasons at Burnley.

The 30-year-old Pope will compete with Martin Dubravka to be manager Eddie Howe’s first-choice goalkeeper.

“Nick is an exceptional Premier League and international level goalkeeper so I’m very pleased to be adding strong competition to a very important position,” Howe said.

Howe said there was “a lot of interest” in Pope from other clubs.

Pope, who has made eight England appearances, said “I can’t wait to get started” at Newcastle, where he will be reunited with former teammate Chris Wood. The New Zealand striker joined in the January transfer window.

Burnley was relegated from the Premier League after six seasons following a 2-1 loss — to Newcastle — in the season finale that allowed rival Leeds to survive.…

NBA Draft 2022: Magic taking Paolo Banchero at No. 1 fooled the league and gives us chaos for years to come

Remember how this was supposed to go?

1. Jabari Smith Jr.
2. Chet Holmgren
3. Paolo Banchero
4. Jaden Ivey

That’s what most mocks were telling you as of early Thursday evening, mere minutes before the 2022 NBA Draft got underway. Despite the fact that — as we previously laid out right here — the debate over who should go No. 1 was as compelling as we’d seen in years. That concept wound up proving true. Somehow.

Orlando, what have you done?

Made claim to one of the boldest 11th hour, 59th minute gambits in NBA Draft history, that’s what.

Ever since the night of the lottery, May 17, it seemed all the momentum was behind the idea that the Magic were going to go with convention and take Smith at No. 1. Oklahoma City was correspondingly rumored from the jump to be enamored with Holmgren. That, naturally, would leave Houston with the obvious choice of taking who was left of the big three — selecting Banchero third.

The Kings, who are undergoing the worst playoff drought of any pro sports franchise, surely would have to take the best player available at No. 4, right? Ivey. It would have to be him.

Then the betting markets went wild earlier in the week. Banchero moved from +1400 all the way to +175 (still behind Smith) to go No. 1. Subsequent reporting tried to extinguish that rumor.

Then, shortly before 8 p.m. ET on Thursday night, it all got blown to shreds. Chaos. The forecast was not reality. This is reality.

Banchero first to the Magic.

Holmgren second to the Thunder.

Smith — somehow! — goes third to the Rockets.

Keegan Murray — hello! — fourth to the Kings.

And then Ivey, who may well prove to be the best player in this draft 10 years from now, Ivey fell into the lap of the Detroit Pistons.

In what could prove to be one of the most talented drafts in recent history, Orlando and Sacramento — two franchises that …
