ASUU: Labour mobilize for nationwide protest, three-day warning strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), yesterday, said it has fully mobilized all its affiliates across sectors for a total shut down of the economy today.

The two-day nationwide protest is in solidarity with the over five months strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Addressing affiliates ahead of the protest for Lagos zone, NLC Chairman, Lagos Council, Funmi Sessi, described as insensitive, government’s attitude to universities workers’ plights.

She said as early as 6:00a.m., all workers would converge under the bridge at Ikeja and march to Government House, Alausa, to deliver a letter from the NLC national body to Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu.

The protest, she said, is to compel the Federal Government to meet the demands of ASUU and address the poor handling of the education sector.

She said: “We are already fully mobilized. We will be on the street using the protest to drum support for parents of the students, who have been home for this long period,” she said.

According to her, NLC has charged all the private institutions owned by the state government to abstain from going to work, adding that it is the directive from the national body that Lagos State University (LASU) and other state-owned institutions should join the protest as workers.

“If the government like, let them bring all their armoured tanks and security agencies, we will face them. We are using this opportunity to tell all institutions in Lagos to come out in solidarity with us because the reward will be for all. Injury to one is an injury to all,” she added.

Sessi also emphasized that the national grid should go down to zero and for health workers, only emergency services would be allowed.

Speaking at the meeting, Zonal Coordinator, ASUU, Lagos, Adelaja Odukoya, maintained that the dispute that caused unions in the universities to be on prolonged strike was a deep-rooted crisis.

He said: “The struggle is in the interest of our children. Enough is enough, government must fund education. If we allow government to continue, they will destroy …

Terrorists ambush Guards Brigade in Abuja, forces closure of schools

Barely 24 hours after terrorists, who hijacked the Kaduna-bound train released a video, where they threatened to kidnap President Muhammadu Buhari and Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, insecurity fears heightened at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), leading to the immediate closure of all unity schools in Abuja.

This was after three soldiers sustained injuries in an ambush by Boko Haram terrorists in Bwari Area Council of the FCT. The soldiers from the elite Guards Brigade guarding the FCT as well as the presidential seat of government were ambushed along Bwari Kubwa road, while on patrol of Bwari Area where the Nigerian Law School and the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) is located.

The Guards Brigade is in charge of the security of the President, his entire family, the Vice President, Very Important Personalities (VIP), the Federal Capital Territory and its surrounding states. This would be the first direct encounter between terrorists and the Brigade of Guards in Abuja.

The soldiers from 7 Guards Battalion, who have been carrying out patrol in the town following intelligence report of an impending attack on the Nigerian Law School, came under heavy fire around the Kubwa-Bwari road.

The wounded soldiers have been moved to the 7 Guards Medical center, where they are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition.

The signal message on the attack reads: “Troops on routine patrol along Kubwa-Bwari were ambushed by suspected terrorists. Three soldiers were injured during the attack. The soldiers have been evacuated for medical attention. Details on the extent of their injuries are still under confirmation. The ambush attack happening within the general area of Bwari shows that the terrorists are actually within the location and possibly preparing to carry out their plans to attack the law school in Bwari as earlier reported.”

When contacted, the spokesperson of the Guards, Captain Godfrey Anebi Abakpa, confirmed the attack but declined further comments.

It was earlier reported that while responding to potential terror attacks in the nation’s capital following a security alert by the FCT command of the …

Planned Okada ban will deepen poverty, insecurity – ActionAid Nigeria

A non-governmental organization, ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) said it agreed with the Federal Government (FG’s) plan to ban the use of motorcycles and mining activities, still, expressed concern on the impacts of the move on the socio-economic lives of the people.

The group in a press statement it circulated on Monday admitted that the approach  may cut the supply of logistics and source of funds for the purchase of arms to the terrorists, but it opined while this was being contemplated in the national interest to combat insecurity, “there must be well thought-out alternatives to lessen the effects of the attendant loss of livelihoods on the people that will be affected”.

The statement advised that regardless of the means being considered for the proposed ban on Okada riders, artisanal and small-scale miners, it must be implemented in a way that will not further worsen the country’s dire economic situation, recalling that a World Bank report has already noted that the number of poor persons in Nigeria will rise to 95.1 million in 2022.

ActionAId  added that the number of poor people was 89.0 million in 2020, meaning that over 6.1 million more persons would have fallen into the poverty bracket between 2020 and 2022, a 6.7 per cent increase, while the projected 2022 figures, the number of poor persons in Nigeria has had a four-year increase of 14.7 per cent from the 2018/19 figure of 82.1 million to the projected 95.1 million in 2022. It established that in Nigeria, the poverty rate has been aided by the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, the growing population, the high level of inflation, which stood at 18.6 per cent as of June 2022 and the harsh effects of the Ukraine-Russia warfare, adding that the development is coming after the Nigerian government said it lifted 10.5 million Nigerians out of poverty between 2019 and 2021.

It recalled that the President has repeatedly said the Bank of Industry has created nine (09) million jobs in the country since 2015, and different schemes to create jobs and …

Significance of President Buhari’s visit to Liberia – Presidency

The Presidency says President Muhammadu Buhari’s trip to Liberia on Tuesday signifies the importance attached to the security and wellbeing of that country and the rest of West Africa.

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, offered the clarification in a statement.

On July 26, Liberia marks a Special Independence Anniversary, commemorating 175 years of self-rule, with the country being the oldest independent post-colonial African State.

According to Shehu in the statement on Monday, Buhari is the Special Guest of Honor at the celebration and will deliver an address. He said: “The trip to Liberia comes at a time when political instability and the return of coups-d’état have upended two to three decades of democratic order in the sub-region.

“Liberia, Sierra-Leone along with Nigeria are going into elections in 2023 and President Buhari is expected to emphasize to them the importance of free, fair and credible elections.

“The President is expected to stress the importance of the respect for rule of law rule throughout the sub-region. Without rule of Law and constitutional rule, there cannot be security, peace and development.

“Peace and security of Liberia (and Sierra-Leone) is important to Nigeria given the enormous investments in men, material and resources expended by this country to secure the two states.

“Without the leadership of Nigeria in the context of ECOWAS to secure these two, there would not have been a Liberia on the map in its present configuration today.”

The presidential aide said Nigeria and Liberia would bilaterally bring to the table issues of cross-border terrorism, bolstering defense and trade ties.

“The warmth of the relationship and personal chemistry between President Buhari and George Weah of Liberia is no less significant and will play a key role in the events of tomorrow,” he added.…

Train attack: Shock as terrorists vow to kidnap Buhari, el-Rufai

Irked by Federal Government’s inability to meet their demands, terrorists who kidnapped the Kaduna-Abuja train passengers on March 28, 2022, have vowed to abduct President Muhammadu Buhari and governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasiru el-Rufai if their requests are not met.

The terrorists, suspected to be members of Ansaru, also stated that they would abduct other prominent Nigerians, as well as cause mayhem in the country.

These were contained in a new video the group released yesterday. The viral video saw the terrorists flogging the remaining male passengers of the ill-fated train attack, while female passengers were asked to line in front of the male passengers.

The nearly three minutes video showed a bearded passenger, who was asked to speak on their behalf, saying the terrorists told them that they did not plan to keep them as hostage for more than a week, but for government’s nonchalance. He, therefore, called on the international community and the United Nations (UN) to come to their aid since the government has failed to ensure their freedom.

Also, in the background, an elderly woman, about 85 years old, was heard cursing the Federal Government in Hausa, saying, “Allah ya isa” (meaning We leave you with God). She lamented that they voted the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Buhari with the hope that the North and entire country would be secured, but it was all in vain.

The terrorists threatened to kill and sell off some of the remaining train passengers in captivity.

“This is our message to the government of Nigeria and just as you have seen these people here, by God’s grace, you will see your leaders; your senators and governors will come before us. These ones you are seeing here, we will keep some as our slaves and sell them off just as our Imam told you in the past.

“Just like the Chibok girls that were sold off, we will equally sell these ones as slaves. If you don’t adhere to our demands, we will kill the ones we need …

Keke Ogungbe, ID Cabasa Promise Stardom for Winners of Naija Star search

Naija Star Search show is unique because the focus is solely on Afrobeats, an umbrella term for all kinds of songs originating in Nigeria. Music Label Executive, Kenny Ogungbe led ID Cabasa and Asa Gangali, to audition contestants in Lagos.

Ogungbe said the audition judges would be looking out for authenticity, potential, originality and street credibility among the talents who will finally be selected for the show.

He added that about ten finalists from the show would be groomed by Kennis Music label and given a platform to turn their raw talents into superstars.

“In 10 seconds I can tell if a contestant has that fire in him or her. I can tell you because I am a radio DJ and I know when the talent is there. This is something I have been doing for almost 30 years and the idea with this is to take it to the masses, the grassroots, your next door neighbor,” Ogungbe said. Weighing in on the show, ID Cabasa, a celebrated music producer, who is responsible for several musical hits from 9ice to Olamide and Wizkid, said the Naija Star Search can’t come at a better time.

He said, “Naija Star Search is coming at a time when Afrobeats has been able to gain its ground as a global genre. What platforms like this will offer aspiring talents is the opportunity to hit it and hit it big as well as getting paid in global currencies like Dollars.

“For me, I will be looking forward to what the talent is bringing on which includes the talent, the energy and the star power because the plan is to ensure our winners go on to do great things in the Nigerian, African and global music scenes. We just don’t want to have a show and the winner goes home; no, we would be working with winners and supporting them to get their footing and succeed under our mentorship and support.”

On his part, co-audition judge, Asa Gangali, noted that it is imperative for all contestants

Tems features on the soundtrack of Black Panther sequel ‘Wakanda Forever’

Details: Nigerian superstar Tems features on the soundtrack of the yet-to-be-released ‘Black Panther’ sequel ‘Wakanda Forever’. This surprise was revealed when Marvel released the trailer for Wakanda Forever on Sunday 24th July 2022 and it featured Tems singing a cover for Bob Marley‘s ‘No Woman No Cry’.

Significance of a Nigerian and African Artist for the soundtrack of ‘Wakanda Forever’: The Black Panther franchise is based on a fictional African country ‘Wakanda’ and this carries significant sentimental and cultural value for Africans and blacks all around the world.

The soundtrack album for the first installment of Black Panther was curated by Kendrick Lamar and it featured artists such as The Weeknd, SZA, Travis Scott, Future, Khalid, School Boy Q, Jorja Smith, Swalee, and James Blake, amongst others.

The notable omission of African artists drew great criticism from Africans who felt relegated in a movie that was supposedly about them. The choice of Tems is perhaps aimed at correcting this and giving the movie more African representation.

Why Tems?: Tems is currently one of the hottest Nigerian and African artists internationally. Since she was featured on Wizkid‘s ‘Essence’, she has gone to achieve international success winning the BET for Best International Act while also featuring on Drake‘s, Future‘s albums, and more recently, Beyonce‘s album.

Tems is an artist that appeals to black audiences in America and Europe, especially among Gen Z consumers. She also has sizeable followership in Nigeria and Africa which makes her a perfect choice for an Afro-centric movie.

The Indigenous People of Biafra has announced a N2 million bounty on the Imo State Commander of the Ebubeagu security outfit.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the spokesman of the IPOB, Emma Powerful, on Thursday.

IPOB accused the Command of murdering 14 youths in Otulu and Awo-Mmamma area of the state.

Powerful said the Eastern Security Network in Imo State has been given the task of fishing out the Ebubeagu Commander in the state.

The statement said: “Hope Uzodinma of Imo State is killing his people in honor of his agreement with the caliphate and consistently lies to the public.“The head of this murderous militia named Ebube-Agu in Imo State is one drug and cult leader returnee from Mozambique, (name withheld by News Express) (Aka Ogwu). As a result of his murderous terrorist activities against our people, IPOB hereby declares this Ebube-Agu Commander in Imo State wanted. He is now a wanted person in Biafra land.

“Anybody who gives useful information about him and what will lead to the capture of this murderer will get a reward of 2 million Naira from IPOB. ESN Imo State Command has also been given a matching order to look for him to account for the innocent blood of Biafrans his criminal gang has wasted.”

The deceased were reportedly killed by operatives of Ebubeagu while returning from a wedding.

The Department of State Services classified those killed as members of the ESN and not wedding guests.

The DSS said the youths were killed during an exchange of fierce gunfire with a joint security team.

General Manager lists powers of LASTMA operatives

The General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Bolaji Oreagba, says the authority’s major function is to control traffic, but its duties also include enforcement of the traffic laws.

The General Manager of LASTMA stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Wednesday.

Oreagba was reacting to allegations of excesses by some of its officials in carrying out their duties on Lagos roads.

The General Manager said that in doing its job, its men were not mandated to arrest violators of traffic laws but to “apprehend” their vehicles. He said: “We don’t arrest, we apprehend vehicles of violators of the traffic laws.

“The only occasion where we arrest people has to do with when anyone assaults our officers, and it will not be immediate arrest at that particular time.

“There must be video evidence to show that the officer is truly assaulted, and arrest is later by the police.

“One of the commercial drivers on the 20th of March defecated on his hand but was not arrested at the moment, but his vehicle was apprehended immediately.

“The offender was later arrested on 4th of July while he was immediately taken to the court for prosecution.

“So, we don’t arrest offenders.”

Oreagba said that if an officer apprehended a vehicle, the owner would like to come to LASTMA office to claim the vehicle.

The LASTMA boss said that the authority had the legal authority to dispossess the offender of the vehicle, to move it to its yard or tow the vehicle to avoid traffic on the highway.

He said that the Lagos State Government had installed a technology that would capture traffic infringement to enhance LASTMA’s operations.

Oreagba said that the authority had stationed cameras, body cameras and Traffic Management Devices at traffic points.

“The Traffic Management Device does recording and goes directly to the control room immediately it finishes recording,” he said.

Oreagba said that the device had the ability to scan number plates, and if there was an unsettled violation, the device would …

Devin Haney vs. George Kambosos Rematch Scheduled for Oct. 16 in Australia

The highly anticipated rematch between Devin Haney and George Kambosos for the undisputed lightweight championship reportedly has a date.

According to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, the fight is “being planned” for Oct. 16 in Kambosos’ native Australia and will be broadcast in primetime on ESPN on Oct. 15.

Haney (28-0, 15 KO) defeated Kambosos via unanimous decision in June to claim all four belts at 135 pounds. The bout agreement Haney had signed in March included a return fight in Australia for later in the year, and Kambosos exercised his rematch clause immediately after his loss.

Kambosos (20-1, 10 KO) had upset Teofimo Lopez by split decision in November to claim the undisputed lightweight crown after an exciting fight that saw both boxers hit the canvas before the final bell. But the 23-year-old Haney outclassed him during their match, using his jab to keep the fight on the outside and cruise to a lopsided victory.

Coppinger noted that a site for the rematch has not yet been finalized, but it could take place at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, the home of the Australian Open.

The lightweight division is arguably the most exciting weight class in boxing right now thanks to a long list of intriguing matchups and promising contenders.

Lopez is set to make his return on Aug. 13 against Pedro Campa. Ryan Garcia is coming off a knockout victory at 140 pounds this past Saturday and called for a super fight against Gervonta “Tank” Davis. Plus, former three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko is waiting in the wings after his decision victory over Richard Commey in December.…

He added that the report captured all films submitted to the board from across the country.

“The report also shows a slight increase in the number of movies produced from 541 in the first quarter to 553 in the second quarter of the year.

He said “209 of the films came in from Lagos State Censorship Centre of the board, representing the chunk of the movies produced during the period, followed by Abuja with 189 movies.

“Onitsha recorded 92 movies, Kano brought in 44, while Jos and Abeokuta centers recorded 10 and four movies respectively,” he said.

Thomas added that the analysis by censorship location further showed

that Port Harcourt and Ibadan got two movies each, while Benin stood beneath with just one film within the period under review.

“The steady increase in output is also indication of the increased contribution of the film industry to economic growth, in terms of direct and indirect jobs in the entire value chain in filmmaking.

“Our cordial relationship with the recognized guilds/associations in the industry, has also played important role.”

He urge them to ensure that their members submitted their films for censorship and approval.

“As a Federal Government agency, we are committed in providing enabling environment for filmmakers.

He said the NFVCB would always ensure that uncensored and other unwholesome films did not find their way into the Nigeria market,” he added.

Davido calls out INEC for failing to issue certificate of return to his uncle days after winning Osun gov election

The music star took to his Twitter page on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, where he called out the umpire body. 48hrs after our @AAdeleke_01 victory at the Osun Gubernatorial elections, we are yet to receive our certificate. @inecnigeria should we send you fuel money? LOL Please no one should tamper with the will of the Osun People! Issue the certificate as required by law!” he tweeted.

This is coming barely 48 hours after INEC declared Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party as the winner of the July 16 gubernatorial election in Osun State.

Adeleke polled 403,371 votes to defeat the incumbent governor of the state, Gboyega Oyetola, who polled 375,027 votes.

The PDP candidate won the governorship election with 28,344 votes.

Adeleke won 17 of the 30 Local Government Areas in the state.

This is the second time Adeleke and Oyetola will face each other in a gubernatorial contest.

In 2018, Oyetola defeated Adeleke after a rerun, which took place in seven polling units.

The incumbent governor won the election with 482 votes.

Osun 2022: How I ‘poisoned’ Aregbesola’s loyalists, associates — Adeleke

The Osun State Governor-Elect, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has revealed how he “poisoned” some of the loyalists and associates of a former Governor of the State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who is now Minister of Interior, to win the June 16, 2022 poll in the state.

The Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the election revealed this as part of his strategy in a Channels Television interview.

Adeleke was on Sunday declared winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission after polling 403,371 votes to that of the incumbent and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gboyega Oyetola, who polled 375,027 votes.

Aregbesola, a member of the APC, was in Germany while the election held. Adeleke told Channels Television: “I did not work with Aregbesola.

“I didn’t even talk to him, but all I know is his associates.

“For example, Kolapo Alimi, one of the lawyers that represented Oyetola at the tribunal.

“Then, anytime I saw him (Alimi) in court, because I’m a civilised person, I will go to them and greet them and say: ‘How are you doing?’

“It was later he apologised and said he was thinking: ‘Why is senator Adeleke greeting me? We are trying to mess him up and he is still greeting me.’

“But he later told me that while I was greeting him, I didn’t know that I was giving them poison.

“They knew that I won the election and they rigged me out and I was still greeting them.

“I believe that Aregbesola and Oyetola fell out.

“He (Alimi) came to me and said he has watched me and that he wants to join our party and we accepted.

“But Aregbesola directly?

No.

“But we know a lot of top APC that joined.

“Assuming that I had been talking to Aregbesola one way or the other, then I would say that maybe he gave them go-ahead to support me.

“These people have grown.

“They have their own minds to decide if they want to join me or not.

“They believed that I was the …
