France beat Spain to win Nations League

France came from behind once again to win the European Nations League at the expense of Spain in Milan.

Mikel Oyarzabal put Spain ahead on Sunday at the San Siro before Karim Benzema struck back moments later.

Kylian Mbappe completed a second comeback at these finals for Les Blues, who secured their place in this final by coming from two down against Belgium.

After a tactical, nervy and tight contest for more than an hour, the game burst into life. A frustrated Paul Pogba, looking wound up after being booked for a stamp on Sergio Busquets, drove through midfield and eventually the ball found Theo Hernandez who cracked the ball against the bar.

Spain raced up the other end and took the lead with a fine show of strength from Oyarzabal before a brilliant low finish into the far corner past Hugo Lloris.

Benzema had barely had a sniff since the opening five minutes, when he had rounded Unai Simon in goal but saw his cut-back cleared, until he struck while Spanish fans were still celebrating the opener.

The Real Madrid striker collected the ball on the left and, cutting inside at the corner of the box, bent a wonderful strike into the far corner, with Simon getting a touch but unable to prevent it finding the back of the net.

Mbappe was also having a quiet night but was alert when he needed to be, racing onto a ball from Theo Hernandez to put him one-on-one with Simon. Mbappe showed wonderful composure to delay, throw in a step-over and finish past Simon.

VAR checked Mbappe’s goal for offside but it was allowed to stand despite the striker being in an offside position due to the slightest of touches from Spanish defender Eric Garcia.

Lloris made two fine late saves to deny Spain a leveller, stopping from Oyarzabal and Yeremi Pino.…

France crash out of Euro 2020 on penalties to Switzerland

Kylian Mbappe missed the all important spot-kick as France crashed out of Euro 2020 on penalties to Switzerland in the last 16 after a rollercoaster 120 minutes of action. The Paris Saint-Germain star failed to score at the tournament and he fluffed his lines under the pressure as Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer denied him from 12 yards to book his side’s place in the quarter-finals where they will meet Spain. Arsenal midfielder and Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka won the toss and decided to go first in the shootout – it was a decision he would not live to regret. Mario Gavranovic, Fabian Schar, Manuel Akanji, Ruben Vargas and Admir Mehmedi made no mistake from the spot as Switzerland scored all five of their spot-kicks.

Ricardo Rodriguez stepped up but was denied by the paws of Hugo Lloris who dived down to his right to make a crucial save.

Seconds later up the other end, France made them pay as Karim Benzema controlled beautifully and slotted prodded the ball past the onrushing Sommer.

The Real Madrid front man, who has made his return for Les Blues at the tournament, then headed in a second shortly after to put France in front.

Paul Pogba then scored the goal of the night when he curled home from 30-yards to showcase his star quality.

But the game wasn’t done there as Seferovic pulled back another with his second of the night to give the Swiss hope.

Then in the dying embers, shortly after he had a goal disallowed, Gavranovic rifled home an equaliser to send the game to extra-time.

There is now plenty for France to ponder and although they were rocked by injuries ahead of the knockout stages, their …

Macron: What happens in the shrine remains in the shrine

A few days ago we told you that the french President will be visiting the african shrine in lagos, Yesterday President Macron had a wonderful time at the Femi Kuti Shrine

French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday night made the audience at Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s Afrika Shrine laugh, when he joked that ‘What happens in the shrine remains in the shrine’.

He was asked to relive some of his nostalgia of having been a patron of the Shrine when he worked in Nigeria at the French Embassy in 2004.

Some of the memories of his six months stay in Lagos he relived when he met President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, including remembering attending a concert by Femi Kuti, Fela’s first son,

But he was not ready to go down memory lane on Tuesday night and instead threw the humorous line at the audience.

In another video of the night posted by Afrika Shrine on Instagram, President Macron was caught, along with host, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, applauding the afro-ballistic performance by Femi Kuti and his Positive Force band.

Macron challenged Nigerian youths to get involved in politics to change the narrative of the nation.

Macron, while describing politics as important, said only Nigerians could change their image before the comity of nations.

The French President gave the challenge at the event tagged “Celebrate African Culture.”

He noted that the future of Africa and the task of making it great rested with Africans, saying that the youths have a crucial role to play.

“Africa needs a new generation of Africans to share the new narrative about Africa all over the world,” he said.

According to him, politics is important because it is a tool to change the society.

Macron described the Afrika Shrine as an iconic place of strength, music, culture and the late Fela as a politician who wanted a change for the society.

“I am very happy to be here. Let me remind you that this place — shrine is a music place as well as politics …
