Nigerian Childhood Days By Funmi James

Nigerian Childhood Days

4 ‘o’ clock was my favorite hour of the day while growing up, why?.. because 4 ‘o’ clock was pink ranger time!.. I would rush home after school lesson which ends by 3:30pm to play pink and yellow ranger with my cousin and kid brother, transforming into pink ranger wasn’t so hard, all I needed was the paper watch my brother and I made and a pink skirt on top of anything I was wearing.

The instrumental of ‘Ise Oluwa’ on Channels tv brings nostalgia, what usually follows after that was news or cartoons, we were more interested in the latter though.

Channels tv at that time was my favorite station, it was like my cartoon network and nickelodeon at the same time. Dazzling my young self with cartoons like Carebears, Ultraman, Voltron, My little pony, Super ted, Scooby doo, Frekazoid, Flintstone, Yogi bear, Rugrats, Simpsons and Power Rangers.

Asides cartoons I can remember using empty cans, sand and water to cook my own delicacies which I usually use my chin to taste, sometimes I add leaves and flowers to the mix just to give the impression of cooking efo riro like my mom. My bestie then was an old brown teddy bear which was usually tied to my back, it was almost as tall as I was, with its one eye and so many holes in it thanks to my kid brother’s experiments.

School time!

Going to school was fun too, I always looked forward to the goody goody, okin biscuit, frunas sweet, the chocolate and milk paste that comes in tiny plates with small spoons, Gogo (that was a common form of m&ms then).

I didn’t like the recitation of multiplication tables in class after morning assembly though, because our proprietress comes to the class to ask us one by one. We get two strokes of her cane if we are not correct. Lunch breaks were fun too, we get to buy food, play suwe and do our swinging competition, although the school serves lunch …

IPOB threatens to disrupt Ohanaeze’s meetings on restructuring

DESPITE its apology and regrets for disrupting the Eastern Consultative Assembly, ECA, meeting of Igbo leaders in Enugu recently, the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, has threatened to disrupt any meeting of Ohanaeze Ndigbo meant to discuss restructuring of Nigeria, or 2019 election, as it insists that Biafra is non-negotiable.

IPOB members IPOB in a statement yesterday, blasted Ohanaeze Ndigbo for sabotage, warning that any meeting organised by Igbo leaders on restructuring and one Nigeria will be disrupted.

This is as another pro-Biafra group, Coalition of Biafra Restoration Citizens, declared that its members would actively participate in 2019 election to elect people, who genuinely have the interest of Ndigbo at heart, irrespective of their political affiliations.

The group blamed the marginalisation and underdevelopment of Igbo land on selfishness on the part of Igbo leaders, who have had the opportunity to move the region forward, but failed. The coalition is comprised of three pro-Biafra groups, namely Biafra Independence Organisation, Igbo Revolutionary Movement and Eastern Peoples Renewal.

Our leaders selling us However, IPOB, in a statement by its spokesman, Emma Powerful in Enugu, said it was not interested in restructuring, Igbo presidency or election in Nigeria, insisting that “the era of selling the collective interest of the masses to the highest bidder has come to an end.” The statement read in part: “All we want is referendum not restructuring; we want Biafra not Nigeria.

We have buried too many people, we have lost too many souls, we are pained by the innocent who are still languishing in illegal detention all over Nigeria and we are enraged by the betrayal of those we call socio-political leaders. Only the total restoration of Biafra will suffice, anything else is mere waste of time.

“We read with disdain the statement credited to an Ohanaeze Ndigbo spokesperson regarding the incident that took place at the Eastern Consultative Assembly, ECA, event in Enugu recently. What happened at the said event will be nothing compared to what shall become of Ohanaeze Ndigbo should they attempt to convene any public …

Benue killings: Enough of this war, life is sacred — Mark

FORMER Senate President, Senator David Mark, has pleaded that enough of the killings in Benue State and other parts of the country against the backdrop that life is sacred.

In a statement, yesterday, by his Media Assistant, Paul Mumeh, Mark described as sad and frustrating, the unabating killings in parts of Benue State despite repeated peace moves between the indigenes and the herdsmen in the state. David Mark Only on Monday, about 26 indigenes of Omusu community in Okpokwu Local Government Area of the state were murdered in cold blood by assailants believed to be herdsmen.

Mark in a reaction to the incident condemned the unwarranted killings of innocent citizens, pointing out that the crisis was degenerating to something akin to “war without end,” defying all peaceful approaches.

He said: “I’m aware of various peace initiatives over the incessant clashes resulting to loss of lives and property.

That the killings continue unabated is something beyond the ordinary. “Let me once again appealed to the assailants to sheathe their swords and allow peace to reign. Whichever side of the divide and whatever vocation you are engaged in, no progress can be made in a crisis-ridden environment.” Mark who bemoaned the degenerating cases of insecurity in the land, said, “From abduction of innocent school girls in Dapchi, numerous cases of kidnapping to outright terrorism against unsuspecting citizens, the situation is frustrating.

“We must all make concerted efforts to achieve peace in our communities. Our security agencies should rise up to the challenges and protect lives and property. Life is sacred and we must not take it for granted.”…

Pep Guardiola’s side into Champions League quarter-finals despite loss

Man City have sealed their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals with a 5-2 aggregate score, despite losing 2-1 to Basel in the second leg.

Pep Guardiola’s side held a 4-0 advantage from the first tie in Switzerland three weeks ago, and it took Gabriel Jesus just seven minutes to open the scoring as he made his first start since New Year’s Day.

But 10 minutes later, Mohamed Elyounoussi equalised for Basel on the night before Michael Lang added the second in the 71st minute.

It ended a run of 12 successive Champions League wins at the Etihad Stadium for City, although they will still be in next Friday’s quarter-final draw thanks to the aggregate victory.…

Tottenham 1-2 Juventus, Tottenham Crash Out Of UCL

Tottenham were knocked out of the Champions League after Juventus scored twice in three minutes to win the second leg of their last-16 clash 2-1 at Wembley and secure a 4-3 aggregate victory.

Heung-min Son’s 39th-minute opener looked to have put Spurs on track for the quarter-finals.

But, having created little in the first hour of the match and looking to be on the ropes, Juve stunned the hosts with a quickfire double from Gonzalo Higuain (64) and Paulo Dybala (67).

Harry Kane came agonisingly close to a late equaliser but saw his header roll along the goal-line after hitting the post.

As Juventus celebrated wildly at the final whistle, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino headed straight down the tunnel, having seen his side blow a golden chance to make the last eight for the first time since 2010/11.

B’mouth vs Tottenham
March 11, 2018, 3:30pm

Unlike in Turin, where Juventus scored twice in the opening 10 minutes, this time it was Spurs who made the fast start, as they set a pace that the visitors struggled to cope with in the first half.

Son forced Gianluigi Buffon into an early save with a shot across goal before Kane rounded the Juventus goalkeeper but could only hit the side-netting from a tight angle.

Juventus were rightly aggrieved in the 17th minute when they were not awarded a penalty after Jan Vertonghen slid in and caught Douglas Costa from behind.

Gonzalo Higuain equalises at Wembley

However, that was a rare positive moment for the visitors, as Buffon punched away a header from Son and Dele Alli and Kane also had shots before the deadlock was broken in the 39th minute.

Alli was denied by a sliding challenge as he was set to pull the trigger but the ball broke for Kieran Trippier to square for Son to finish with a scuffed effort.

Miralem Pjanic almost replied quickly with a shot that went narrowly wide, but otherwise Juventus offered little, with Spurs continuing to look the dominant side …

26 killed as herdsmen sack Benue village in fresh attack

It was a sad and sorrowful day for Benue State again, yesterday, as no fewer than 26 persons were confirmed killed Monday evening in a bloody attack on Omusu village, at Ojigo Ward, Edumoga in Okpokwu Local Government Area of the state by suspected herdsmen, just a day President Muhammadu Buhari through his media aide, promised to visit the state.

It will be recalled that the New Year day attack on two local government areas of the state left over 73 persons dead and attacks and killings have become a recurring development in the state since then. Last Monday’s night attackers also left several persons injured and many others missing, while the entire community has been deserted. Several houses, huts and food barns were set ablaze by the marauding herdsmen. A source in the community disclosed that the well armed herdsmen stormed the village about 4p.m., shooting sporadically at anything they sighted and burning down houses in the community. His words: “It was a bloody evening in Okpokwu.

Armed herdsmen stormed Omusu village and opened sporadic fire on the locals, killing and butchering anyone and anything they came across.” Ortom visits, fights tears Among the first callers to the deserted community was Governor Samuel Ortom, who led members of the state security council for an on-the-spot assessment of the area. Addressing the people present at the Omusu village square, Governor Ortom who fought back tears as he spoke, said killer herdsmen have continued to rain terror on the people of the state despite efforts by his government to stem the tide. “Heads of security agencies said people doing this are from other countries. These killings are not acceptable. We will not fold our arms and wait for people to come from other countries and invade our land, kill, maim, rape our women and children and go free. This cannot be allowed to continue. “That is why we have decided at the state security council level to come here for on-the-spot assessment. Already, as recorded by the local government chairman, 24 …
