As WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram return, Zuckerberg loses $6b

Facebook founder and Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg’s personal wealth has reduced by more than $6 billion in a few hours, knocking him down a notch on the list of the world’s richest people.

The drastic reduction in his net worth was largely due to a revelation by a whistleblower and also outages that affected Facebook Inc’s flagship products.

The flagship products include Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.

According to a report by Yahoo Finance, a selloff sent the social-media giant’s stock plummeting 4.9 per cent on Monday, adding to a drop of about 15 per cent since mid-September. The stock slide on Monday sent Zuckerberg’s worth down to $121.6 billion, dropping him below Bill Gates to No. 5 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

He’s down from almost $140 billion in a matter of weeks, according to the index.

On September 13, the Wall Street Journal began publishing a series of stories based on a cache of internal documents, revealing that Facebook knew about a wide range of problems with its products — such as Instagram’s harm to teenage girls’ mental health and misinformation about the January 6 Capitol riots — while downplaying the issues in public.

The reports have drawn the attention of government officials.

And on Monday the whistleblower revealed herself.

In an explosive 60 Minutes interview that aired in the United States on Sunday, data scientist, Frances Haugen, a former employee in Facebook’s civic integrity unit, revealed that she was the source of the internal documents and research showing the company knew of the harmful effects caused by its platforms.

According to DW, the company’s own findings include knowledge of the harms Instagram caused teen girls’ body image perceptions and a two-tier system of penalties for misuse of its platforms, one for celebrities and the other for the public.

“I’ve seen a bunch of social networks and it was substantially worse at Facebook than what I had seen before,” Haugen told “60 Minutes.”

“The version of Facebook that exists today is tearing our societies apart and …

Ugochukwu said: “Yesterday, a student of MOUAU was killed in an auto crash that involved an SUV and a Truck, which occurred on the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road.

“We are no longer comfortable with that road.

“We are asking that this road should be looked into with immediate effect.

“This road has caused the school so much loss and we seek immediate government attention on the road.

“We are giving four days ultimatum to the state government to commence the palliative works on the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road.”

Also, James Daniel, a student of MOUAU, said the deplorable state of the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road had led to loss of many lives, especially those of students of MOUAU.

“In 2019, we were told that the road has been awarded, but the only work that we have seen is the construction of drainages, leaving the road undone,” Daniel added.

Kogi alleges smear campaign against governor

Kogi State Government has raised the alarm over the alleged smear campaign against Governor Yahaya Bello ahead of the 2023 general elections.

There have been speculations that Governor Bello is interested in the Presidency, a move that has unsettled some major political actors.

Addressing journalists during its quarterly press briefing, yesterday, the Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, who highlighted some of the achievements of the governor, said the state government was aware of plans to paint the governor in bad light ahead of the 2023 general election.

According to him, plots by certain persons to impute embezzlement of the state’s funds on the governor have been unraveled.

His words: “With all of these achievements, it is unfortunate that some disgruntled political liabilities are still bent on launching a smear campaign on the person of Alhaji Yahaya Bello and the Government of Kogi.”

He revealed that several bloggers and media-guns-for-hire had been contracted on retainer to regularly sully the public space with claims of embezzlement by the governor and his administration.

Fanwo added that some of the figures planned to be thrown around in the days, weeks and months to come represented more money than the administration had even seen together at one time.

“We hope that the press will be vigilant and activate their investigative offices before running with such fabricated and unfounded allegations. Despite intense pressure and lobbying from across the country and even Nigerians in the Diaspora, Bello has not told anyone that he is running for President in 2023.

“His Excellency’s position is that he will give an appropriate answer to his supporters at the appropriate time. But Intelligence reports at our disposal show that a certain person is at the center of this conspiracy. We will respond to him with the applicable legal force. Our gentleness must not be mistaken for cowardice,” he warned.…

Fury ended Wilder’s title reign with a scintillating stoppage in their second fight, after their first bout ended in a dramatic draw, and has now been warned to be wary in the third clash.

“My gut says that Tyson will do what Tyson does best in a continuation of the second fight,” said duBoef, president at Top Rank, Fury’s American promotional team.

“But he had better be careful. “On October 9 it will give us the chance to put an absolute conclusion to the trilogy.

Joshua and Fury had been in negotiations for an undisputed title fight earlier this year, but to no avail.

DuBoef said: “I can say that when Fury vs Wilder II ended, I looked to my wife and said: ‘This may have been the most wonderful event in my 20 years that I have ever put on’.

“It had energy, it had competition between passionate fans in America and the UK, it had a definitive ending and it was a spectacle.

“I’ve been involved in big fights that didn’t have a definitive ending, like Oscar De La Hoya vs Felix Trinidad.

“Then Covid-19 hit and I wondered: ‘Will I ever revisit that unbelievable moment again?…

The just concluded sixth season of fan-favourite reality TV show, Big Brother Naija recorded a cumulative vote of over one billion from fans.

The staggering figure confirmed by show host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu comes amid the numerous criticisms that trailed the season as well as the change in voting pattern.

Recall that the show organisers announced weeks before the season started that there would be no paid voting as was the norm in previous seasons. As opposed to paid voting, fans were encouraged to support their favourites by voting on the organizers’ online platforms with more votes allocated to subscribers of their cable TV decoders.

Meanwhile, the ‘Shine Ya Eye’ season rounded up with an intriguing finale show on Sunday, October 3, with guest performances from Made Kuti, Ajebo Hustlers, Lojay and BBNaija alumni Avala and Laycon.

Unlike previous seasons, the ‘Shine Ya Eye’ season spotted six finalists and the much anticipated physical audience for the finale show.

Season six winner Whitemoney made a landslide victory with 47 % of fan votes. Another fan-favourite Liquorose came second place with 22.99% of fan votes while Pere and Cross came in third and fourth place respectively.

Buhari arrives Ethiopia, driven to dinner by Prime Minister

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, on Sunday for the inauguration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for another five-year term in office.

The News Agency of Nigeria monitoring the President’s visit reports that the presidential aircraft carrying Buhari and some members of his entourage landed at the newly built VIP Terminal of Bole International Airport at 5:06pm (Nigerian time).

The Nigerian leader, who was accorded a full guard of honor by the Ethiopian National Defense Force on his arrival, was received by Prime Minister Ahmed.

NAN reports that after the inspection of the guard of honor, the Prime Minister gestured the President into a waiting SUV, took control of the wheels, chauffeuring him straight to the newly built expansive friendship park for a private dinner. The dinner was attended by the President of Ethiopia, Sahle-Work Zewde, and the President of Senegal, Macky Sall.

While in Addis Ababa, the Nigerian leader is expected to deliver a goodwill message at the inauguration event scheduled to hold at the historic Meskel Square.

President Buhari will join other African leaders, who will be attending the event in person, including the Presidents of Djibouti, Kenya, South Sudan, Senegal, Somalia, Uganda and the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A statement by Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesman, on Saturday said Buhari would also attend a State Dinner at the National Defense Headquarters, Addis Ababa.

On the significance of President Buhari’s visit to the country, the Ambassador of Nigeria to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Victor Adeleke, told reporters: “Nigeria and Ethiopia enjoy warm cordial relations, they are equally the two largest democracies in Africa, in this wise, the attendance of President Buhari at the inauguration ceremony of Prime Minister Ahmed is an indication of the President’s commitment to strengthening democracy in Africa.”

BBNaija 2021 finale: Whitemoney wins the ‘Shine Ya Eye’ season

The long anticipated season finale is finally here after 10 weeks of an arguably entertaining show with finalists Whitemoney, Liquorose, Angel, Cross and Pere.

Made Kuti kicked off the finale show with a pack-punching performance from the fan park in Lekki. Interestingly, the center was filled with a physical audience, a first since the pandemic. Right after Kuti’s thrilling performance, Big Brother gave the finalists an emotional speech and it was straight on to business from there.

The first finalist to be evicted was surprisingly the veto power holder of the season and one part of the Emmarose ship, Emmanuel.

Angel’s eviction followed closely. The 21-year-old who won fans over for her free-spirited nature was the second finalist to exit the show.

After a thrilling performance from ex-BBN housemate Avala, Ebuka announced the eviction of another fan-favourite housemate Cross leaving the top three of the season- Whitemoney, Liquorose and Pere.

The second runner-up of the season predictably turned out to be the General himself and the king of the Patriots, Pere. The 36-year-old had an intriguing run on the show from joining as a wild card to his spot in the finals getting nearly lost to Angel.

And to the moment fans anticipated all night. With the strongest contenders finally toe-to-toe, the season finale was certainly unlike the previous season where the winner, Laycon was predictable weeks ahead.

Speaking of the previous season, Laycon’s performance preceded performances from Lojay, Ajebo Hustlers and the biggest announcement of the night confirming Whitemoney as the winner of the ‘Shine Ya Eye’ season.

Whitemoney won the season in a landslide victory scooping 47% of viewers votes. Liquorose came second place with 22.99% of votes.

R. Kelly found guilty, to spend the rest of his life in prison

American singer R. Kelly has been found guilty of sexually abusing women, boys and girls for decades.

The disgraced music star was convicted on Monday, September 27, 2021, on all nine counts including racketeering and violations of the Mann Act, which prohibits the transport of “any woman or girl” across state lines for any “immoral purpose.”

He will be spending the rest of his life in prison.

“This case is not about a celebrity who likes to party a lot. This case is about a predator,” Assistant US Attorney Maria Cruz Melendez said at the beginning of the case.

One of his victims was R&B singer Aaliyah, who Kelly illegally wed in a Chicago hotel room in 1994, when she was 15 years old.

For the illicit nuptials to move forward, Kelly relied on his entourage, prosecutors showed.

Monday’s verdict in federal court in Brooklyn comes just over 2 years after Kelly was arrested in Chicago for multiple federal sex crimes in 2 different states.

Kelly’s legal team called a handful of ex-Kelly employees and associates to take the stand in an effort to discredit allegations the singer sexually abused women, girls and boys.
