Death toll in Philippine military plane crash rises to 50

Philippine security forces searched among coconut trees on a remote southern island Monday for the flight data boxes of an aircraft that crashed and killed 50 people in one of the country’s worst military air disasters.

The Hercules C-130 transport plane was carrying 96 people, most of them recent army graduates, when it overshot the runway while trying to land in sunny weather on Jolo island in Sulu province — a haven for Islamic militants — on Sunday.

Fifty people, including 47 military personnel and three civilians, died when the plane “skidded” and burst into flames in a village, said Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesman Major General Edgard Arevalo.

Another 53 were injured, most of them soldiers. It is not clear if the pilots were among the survivors.

The three people killed on the ground had been working in a quarry, village leader Tanda Hailid told AFP.

Photos of the scene released by the Joint Task Force-Sulu showed the damaged tail and the smoking wreckage of the fuselage’s back section laying in a coconut grove.

“We have people on the ground to make sure the integrity of the pieces of the evidence that we will retrieve, most particularly the flight data recorder,” Arevalo said.

“Aside from eyewitness accounts, we are also looking for recordings, radio conversation recordings between the pilot and the control tower.”

Arevalo said the military had secured the crash site and would ensure that militants on the island did not disrupt search efforts.

Most of the passengers had recently graduated from basic military training and were being deployed to the restive island as part of a counter-insurgency effort in the Muslim-majority region.

The military has a heavy presence in the southern Philippines where militant groups, including the kidnap-for-ransom outfit Abu Sayyaf, operate.

“This is one of the worst tragic incidents that happened in our armed forces,” said Arevalo. Last month, a Black Hawk helicopter went down during a night-time training flight, killing all six on board. The accident prompted the grounding of the Philippines’ entire Black …

Richard Mofe Damijo says he broke the specter of death in his family

The movie star made this known during a chat with Chude Jideonwo on his show ‘WithChude.’

RMD who would be turning 60 on July 6th, said his parents didn’t make it to 60 which is a big deal for him.

“None of my parents lived to be 60, so life for me is just about to get started. There’s been a specter of death around my life, that’s what I’ve been dealing with last year till this year. When I turned 59, it was a big deal for me, big deal for me! My mom died at 59, my father died at 57/58,” he said.

“So, it was like, can I break it? When people see me and I go on a weight loss, people think that… you know, it’s health. Both my parents were diabetic and hypertensive, I don’t want to be that. I don’t want to be diabetic and hypertensive, I want to be healthier.”

“Becoming 60 for me is even a bigger deal, so when July comes and I become 60. You know how the Bible says old things have passed away, I will truly truly become a new man because that is when I’ll make a bucket list. So all these things that you think I’ve achieved or done, for me it’s nothing, like zero.”

“So I’m going to now sit down when I’m 60 and do a bucket list … and then we’ll start.”

Gunmen kill Orderly, driver of APC chieftain in Delta

Gunmen suspected to be hired killers have shot dead a driver and mobile police escort attached to a prominent All Progressives Congress youth leader, Chief Michael Johnny, at the popular Airport Junction in the heart of Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The duo were shot dead on Sunday by gunmen who attacked the vehicle in which they were sent on errand.

Findings revealed that the deceased mobile policeman and driver, identified as Inspector Samuel Arigbanmiga and Stephen Okhea respectively, were on official duty to escort their boss’s wife to church when the incident occurred.

It was reported that they had dropped the madam off at the church and were on their way to run another errand when they were accosted at about 11:12am by their assailants who trailed them in a yellow Lexus SUV. The deceased police and driver, said to have been caught napping at the point their vehicle was accosted, were reportedly shot at close range on the head and stomach.

They both died on the spot.

A Daily Sun correspondent, who visited the scene of crime at about 12:05pm, saw the Divisional Police Officer, Enerhen Division, CSP Mukhtari Bello, leading his men to conduct preliminary investigations on the incident.

While the corpses were immediately taken by the police to be deposited at the mortuary of the Warri Central hospital, the red Toyota Venza jeep, with registration number: BWR – 170AX (Abuja), driven by the victims, the service rifle of the deceased mobile policeman, phones and other items recovered at the scene are currently in custody of the police.

Confirming the incident, the Acting Public Relations Officer, Delta State Police Command, DSP Edafe Bright, said the police have commenced investigations into the case, adding that no stone would be left unturned in bringing the perpetrators of the dastardly act to justice.

When contacted on phone on Sunday, Johnny described the act as a clear case of assassination and an attempt on the life of his family members, and urged the police to carry out thorough …

Lewis Hamilton rues ‘a lot of points lost’ after limping to fourth

Hamilton, while some way behind dominant race winner Verstappen, was running a comfortable second at the Red Bull Ring before he was told of floor damage just after the halfway point of the race, confirmed by Mercedes to have been sustained when running over the kerbs at Turn 10. The seven-time world champion then quickly started losing pace to team-mate Valtteri Bottas and star performer Lando Norris, with both drivers then passing him and dropping him out of the podium positions. The end result leaves Hamilton 32 points behind Verstappen in the title standings, rather than the 26 it likely would have been without his issue.

“I already said before the race that it would be very hard to beat Max of course,” said Hamilton. “It’s obviously frustrating to lose so much downforce on the rear of the car and not be able to hold on to second place.

“So a lot of points lost today.”

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff absolved Hamilton of blame for the damage as he wasn’t “running too hard over the kerb, it was just a part that fell away”.

And asked by Sky F1’s Rachel Brookes about the issue, Hamilton replied: “I wasn’t going over the kerbs any more than anyone else, so I have no idea where it happened, but a lot of damage.

“I was in second when all of a sudden it obviously broke. Second place would have been easy.”

Hamilton added to F1 that “there was not anything I could really do” and that the damage was “super unlucky”.

Hamilton: Upgrade won’t be enough to catch Red Bull

The Austrian GP proved to be Verstappen’s third win in a row, while it was another tough race for Hamilton – who before May’s Monaco GP held the title lead and appeared the man to beat.

“I would say these past five races have been so difficult,” admitted Hamilton. “I’ve obviously lost a lot of ground after these past five races so it’s been pretty painful.”

And Hamilton isn’t exactly optimistic of catching …

Patrick Vieira’s biggest managerial test

The recent managerial merry-go-round has seen similar names linked with jobs at Tottenham, Everton and Crystal Palace – Nuno Espirito Santo did the rounds at all three before landing at Spurs, while Everton opted for Rafa Benitez.

But Steve Parish, Dougie Freedman and the board have moved away from the conventional managerial names to land Vieira, who had turned down the vacant role at Bournemouth earlier in the summer, reportedly in favor of a Premier League move.

He was a player synonymous with Arsenal’s Invisibles and while no one can deny he was among the most talented midfielders of his generation, he has little managerial experience in Europe, let alone in England and even that has not been at senior level.

Vieira also oversaw the incomings of European football royalty. Andrea Pirlo, David Villa and Lampard have all played under him, giving the former France international a key insight into coaching players of such quality.

A look at his most recent spell at Nice could be a concern. Interestingly, he replaced Favre at the Ligue 1 club, who made a late U-turn and decided not to take the Crystal Palace job in June.

His first two seasons can be regarded as largely successful – a seventh then fifth place league finish saw Nice secure Europa League football. But the 2020/21 campaign started off poorly and Vieira was sacked after a run of five successive defeats and an exit at the Europa League group stages. They finished bottom of Group C with just one win and five …

Teenager Emma Raducanu reaches the third round on her Wimbledon debut

The 18-year-old, who sat her A-Levels just two months ago, overcame her Czech opponent 6-2 6-4 having been a late wild card entry into the tournament.

It follows on from her first-round win against Vitalia Diatchenko and means she is now Britain’s last woman standing in the singles at the All England Club. The world No 338 will now face Sorana Cirstea after the Romanian beat 12th seed Victoria Azarenka 7-6 3-6 6-4.

Raducanu had showcased her impressive serve early on as she claimed the first set 6-2, but found herself three love down in the second amid a fightback from the world No 42 Vondrousova, who was runner-up at the 2019 French Open.

The Grand Slam debutante held her nerve and clawed her way back to three games apiece, eventually securing a crucial break courtesy of a double fault to earn a 5-4 advantage before serving out for a landmark victory in one hour and 12 minutes.

In sealing a place in the next round Raducana will earn £115,000, almost quadruple her career earnings heading into the match having only made her debut on the WTA Tour in June.…

Bill Cosby gains freedom from prison as court overturns his sexual assault conviction

On the 30th of June 2021, Pennsylvania’s highest court has overturned his conviction and judgment of sentence, saying his due process rights were violated.

CNN reports that the panel of the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court judges in a verdict released today states that former Montgomery County District Attorney, Bruce Castor, decision to prosecute Mr Cosby was unfair because he breached an agreement signed with the actor.

Bruce Castor is said to have cut a deal with Cosby that if he testified in a civil deposition he would not face trial criminally. The agreement convinced Cosby to make incriminating statements about drugging women but that was ultimately used against him at trial.

In light of these circumstances, the subsequent decision by successor D.A.s to prosecute Cosby violated Cosby’s due process rights,” the judges wrote.

The Supreme Court also believes that it was unduly prejudicial to allow 5 women with stories similar to Andrea Constand to testify against Cosby. The 79-page verdict has detailed that the 83-year-old comedian can not be retried on this case.

Mr Cosby’s family has released a statement signed by their press representative, Andrew Wyatt. “I want to thank the Supreme Court who saw the light and saw the truth“. He also disclosed that he was at the prison to pick him up and take him to his Pennsylvania home.

Mr Cosby was originally given a deal by Bruce Castor in which he was granted immunity. He gave up his fifth amendment rights in hopes that he would get back to work, back to life. And he always showed up for any legal matters and questions on his own accord. Charges should never have been brought against Mr Cosby,” the statement said.

Canadian singer The Weeknd and Angelina Jolie spark romance rumours

They were spotted at the popular celebrity hotspot Giorgio Baldi in Los Angeles on Wednesday, June 30, 2021.

After spending hours at the high-end Italian eatery, they left the restaurant separately to avoid the prying eyes of the paparazzi.

Jolie wore a black silk dress and trench coat while The Weeknd kept it simple in a denim look and black boots.

“They’re clearly not trying to hide [the dinner date],” a source close to The Weeknd told Page Six. “He’s definitely focused on getting to the movie business. He has the new HBO series he’s starring in.”

#BBNaijaReunion: Prince explains beef with Neo

Prince and Neo may have been buddies in the house ( even though the audience knew better) but things took a drastic turn after the show. According to Prince, watching clips of Neo say how he truly felt about him while in the house hurt his feelings.

Both stars had a mild argument about Neo’s apology tactics which Prince interpreted to mean Neo was more interested in getting back in his good graces.

This was definitely another memorable gbas gbos moment in the house. Replaying her ‘mad people’ comment, Vee said it had to do with Wathoni’s constant repetition even when she had tried to communicate her grievances over the bed argument.

Wathoni said she felt both Vee and Tolanibaj could have spoken to her about how they felt if it had absolutely nothing to do with her relationship with Prince at the time.

PIB: Anger as Senate slashes host community share to 3% of oil profit

At long last, the Senate yesterday passed the much-awaited Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), with 30 per cent of profits accruing from Oil and Gas operations by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) now to be set aside for exploration of oil in the frontier basins.

All exploration of frontier basins shall fall under the purview of the Upstream Regulatory Commission. Similarly, three per cent has been reserved for the development of host communities.

However, the Senate reached these decisions amid uproar due to disagreements on the right percentage of oil revenue for host communities.

The report of the Senate Joint Committee on Petroleum, which processed the bill, had proposed five per cent for host communities, while stakeholders had in the original bill proposed 10 per cent. But when the Senate began clause-by-clause consideration of the bill, it was reduced to three per cent.

The decision caused a moment of stalemate as Senators from the Niger Delta region rose against it. Senator James Manager (Delta State) proposed an amendment to retain the provision of five per cent in the report but he was defeated.

As Senate President Ahmad Lawan hit the gavel to re-confirm the three per cent host community provision, Senator George Sekibo ((River State) called for a division. His motion challenged the ruling of the Senate President and the floor again became tensed up.

Fearing the consequences of embarking on a division, the Senate leadership swiftly resorted to pleading with Sekibo to withdraw his motion. Senate leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, said the Senate would be ‘heading to Armageddon’ if it allowed that division to happen.

Lawan also supported the Senate leader and preached the gospel of patriotism to Sekibo who later agreed and withdrew his motion.

Chairman of the Senate Joint Committee that processed the bill, Sabo Muhammed Nakudu (APC, Jigawa West), while presenting the report explained that “the Joint Committee’s recommendation recognises the need for the country to urgently and aggressively explore and develop the country’s Frontier Basins to take advantage of the foreseeable threats to the funding of …

Why we invaded Igboho’s house, what we recovered — DSS + Photos

The Department of State Services has said the secret service coordinated the invasion of the Ibadan, Oyo State home of Yoruba cultural activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, in the early hours of Thursday.  The spokesman of the Service, Dr. Peter Afunanya, made this known on Thursday when those arrested in the house and items recovered were paraded. Afunanya, who confirmed the death of two persons, said it occurred because operatives involved in the joint operation were fired at by those in Igboho’s house. He said the exchange of gunfire lasted for about one hour, during which Igboho reportedly escaped from the house. He said: “In the early hours (about 0134 hours) of today, 1st July, 2021, a joint team of security operatives raided the residence of Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo aka SUNDAY IGBOHO, at Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State.

“This was based on intelligence that he had stockpiled arms in the place.

“On approach to the residence, the team came under heavy gun attack by nine men, suspected to be IGBOHO’s guards.

“Six of them were armed with AK-47 guns and three others with Pump-Action riffles.

“In the course of the exchange, two of IGBOHO’s armed men were gunned down while the rest were subdued and arrested.

“Only one operative who was shot by the assailants on his right hand sustained injury.

“He has however received medical attention and is very stable.”

Afunanya said after the gun exchange subsided, the team procedurally searched the house.

He said recovered among others were seven AK-47 assault rifles; three Pump Action guns; 30 fully charged AK-47 magazines; 5,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition; five cutlasses; one Jack knife; one Pen knife; two pistol holsters; and one binoculars.

Also recovered were a wallet containing $5 in $1 denomination; local and international driver’s licences in Igboho’s name; ATM Cards; a German residence permit, No. YO2N6K1NY, bearing Igboho’s name; two whistles; five cartridges; 18 Walkie-Talkies; three voodoo charm jackets/traditional body armour; two laptops: one Toshiba and one Compaq; and Igboho’s International Passport and …

Suspects who attacked Abia CJ, killed, maim victims nabbed

The Abia State Police Command says it has arrested 10 armed robbery and kidnap suspects, allegedly terrorized residents of the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Janet Agbede, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing newsmen in Umuahia on the recent achievements by the command.

Agbede said two of the suspects confessed to have robbed a former Chief Judge of the state (name withheld).

She said the suspects dispossessed their victim of his ATM cards, “compelled him to release his Personal Identification Number, with which they allegedly withdraw N250,000 from his bank account”.  Also in police net were members of a gang that allegedly waylaid one Uzoma Ndubueze of 50, Ogwo Street, Ohanku in Aba on June 24, while he was driving into his house.

“The gang members abducted their victim, took his Lexus 330 car to Ntigha, shot and killed him and still collected N700,000 ransom from his family,” Agbede said.

She said the victim’s phone was recovered from the gang leader, Abia Daniel, who confessed that his gang members were nine in number.

She said the arrest was facilitated through intelligence and collaboration with the Inspector-General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team on “Operation Restore Peace” mission.

She said the team arrested the suspects at different locations in the state, including Aba.

The police chief said the suspects belonged to two gangs, adding that the smashing of the first gang paved the way for the arrest of the second gang members.

She said Daniel, 41, who was a member of the first gang, later pulled out to form his own gang, where he became the kingpin.

She said the command recovered one AK 47 rifle with 25 rounds of live ammunition, one pump action gun with 10 cartridges, one locally-made double-barrel cut-to-size gun, with 10 live cartridges, one Volkswagen Jetta car and one cellphone from the suspects.

Agbede said the first gang confessed to have kidnapped more than six persons.

She further said the IRT, acting on intelligence report, arrested one Emmanuel Paul, 22, of 40, Ugorji Street, Aba and Ifeanyi …

Tyson Fury sharpening skills with ‘next great heavyweight champion’ Jared Anderson says promoter Bob Arum

Tyson Fury said to me after the Deontay Wilder fight that he attributes a great deal of his success to sparring with Jared Anderson,” promoter Bob Arum says American contender is a future heavyweight king. Fury will defend his WBC championship in a trilogy fight against Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas on July 24 and has again recruited the talented Anderson as a sparring partner.

“We have a guy who Tyson tells me, and a lot of people tell me, will be the next great heavyweight champion,” Top Rank promoter Arum told Sky Sports about Anderson.

“The kid has had nine fights now.

“Talk to Tyson – he gives Tyson hell when they work out. He’s a great sparring partner. “Tyson said to me after the Wilder fight that he attributes a great deal of his success to sparring with Anderson.”

Khris Middleton, Brook Lopez lead Milwaukee to pivotal Game 5 win

The Milwaukee Bucks are one game away from the NBA Finals. On Thursday, they hosted the Atlanta Hawks in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals with both sides missing key contributors. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Trae Young, DeAndre Hunter and Donte DiVincenzo all remain out, but the Bucks did a better job of replacing their superstar’s production. After jumping ahead by as many as 20 points in the first half, the Bucks pulled out the victory, 123-112, to take a 3-2 lead in the series.

Four players stood out. Brook Lopez led the way with a playoff career-high 33 points, but three of his teammates were hot on his trail. Khris Middleton scored 26 points of his own to go along with 25 from Jrue Holiday and 22 from Bobby Portis. Combined, they scored all but 17 of Milwaukee’s points for the game. It was a valiant effort from a hobbled Bogdan Bogdanovic to score 28 for the Hawks, but his teammates couldn’t give him enough support to steal this one.

The Bucks and Hawks will now travel to Atlanta for Game 6 on Saturday. If the Hawks win, Game 7 in Milwaukee will be on Monday. If the Bucks win? They’ll meet the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Finals. For now, here are the three biggest takeaways from Game 5.

1. Brook’s time machine

Before Brook Lopez was a stretch big man, he was a traditional low-post threat. He averaged over 20 points per game four times as a member of the Nets, and he got there primarily by punishing opposing bigs near the basket. As the NBA has grown smaller, his combination of size and skill has only grown deadlier inside. He just hasn’t played for a team that has allowed him to use those skills. As good as Lopez is near the basket, Giannis Antetokounmpo is simply better. So he spaces the floor for his MVP teammate and uses the bulk of his energy on defense.

Antetokounmpo’s absence changed the entire geometry of the floor for the Bucks. …

Top 5 Producers and their tags

5. BeatsByJayy

Tag: BeatsByJayy

Rating: 4.7/5

BeatsByJayy is Nigeria’s number one Hip-Hop producer for a lot of reasons, but his tag almost has as big an identity as his work as a producer for AQ, Blaqbonez, Monster Verse, LAMB Cyphers, MI Abaga, Teeto Ceemos and more. His tag is a female voice saying “BeatsByJayy” and then moaning in the most sensual way.

4. Tempoo

Tag: Mad!

Rating: 4.8/5

The tag was different until 2010, but since then Tempoe has become the MAD! Man, producing hits for Omah Lay, Joeboy, Blaqbonez and more. Already, he’s on an upward trajectory with the aid of Stephanie Okocha and Dvpper Dam. The sky’s the limit.

3. Mi Abaga

Tag: Coin Toss

Rating: 5/5

A lot of people know MI Abaga is a music person through and through. He’s a great rapper, but he might be an even better producer. Most people don’t realize that any record that holds that coin toss is his producer tag, but it is. It can be heard on Yxng Dxnzland ‘The Viper.’

2. Killertunes

Tag: Shabalistica

Rating: 5/5

As noted earlier, in 2018, Nigerian producer Killertunes’ tag was more popular than his name. In fact, people thought his name was Shabalistica.

1. Pheelz

Tag: Rih

Rating: 5/5

At some point, Pheelz used Pheelz Mr. Producer. At some point in 2018, he went on a hiatus and came back with DJ Enimoney-inspired tag, Riddimacoolayor! The tag means the rhythm is cool.

Disbelief, shock trail IPOB leader’s arrest, re-arraignment

Four years after the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, jumped bail and fled the country, he was yesterday re-arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja after his re-arrest by security agents.

Presenting him before the court, counsel to the Federal Government, Shuaib Labaran, said Kanu was arrested through intelligence and collaborative efforts of security agencies. He was, however, silent on where and how Kanu was arrested.

Following Labaran’s ex-parte application, Justice Binta Nyako ordered that Kanu, who was brought to court in handcuffs and hooded before the court’s sitting, be remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

He granted an accelerated hearing by bringing the charge pending against him from the earlier adjourned date of October 20 to July 26 and 27.

Speaking when he appeared in court on criminal charges of terrorism and treasonable felony, Kanu said he escaped from Nigeria after his house was unlawfully invaded by security men with his life seriously threatened. The separatist leader alleged that he would have been killed along with others on the day of the invasion if not for the wisdom he applied to jump bail and flee the country.

His reaction was provoked by the Federal Government’s information through its counsel, Labaran, that Kanu jumped bail granted by the court to escape trial by running out of the country.

Labaran had applied to the court for an order to remand Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The counsel said the request became imperative because lawyers to Kanu were yet to be abreast of his re-arrest.

Arewa elders urged the Federal Government to handle Kanu’s arrest and prosecution with caution. In a statement by the spokesman of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Emmanuel Yawe, it said that Kanu should be prosecuted because he is a threat to Nigeria’s stability as a nation, but urged the government to follow the rules of law.

“We know that the man has no respect for the country called Nigeria and has …
