Rihanna returns to Headline 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show

It is the first scheduled return to the stage for the artist who last performed publicly at the Grammy Awards in early 2018. The music icon, 34, shared an image on Instagram on Sunday hinting that she will perform during the NFL event next year.

In the photo, what appears to be Rihanna’s hand holds up a football. The “Umbrella” singer captioned the post with a single period.

Roc Nation later posted the same image on its respective Instagram account, writing, “Let’s GO,” and tagging Rihanna and the NFL, “#SBLVII.”

“We’re excited to partner with Rihanna, Roc Nation, and the N.F.L. to bring music and sports fans a momentous show,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president for Apple Music and Beats.

There’s been an earlier announcement that the Super Bowl LVII halftime show has inked a sponsorship from Apple Music as part of a multi-year deal with the NFL, the league announced earlier this week. Pepsi had previously announced that it would no longer be returning as a sponsor, following its initial sponsorship at the 2007 show starring Prince and an eventual ten-year agreement that began in 2013.

Grammy Academy CEO reveals ongoing consideration for Afrobeats category

While speaking to the press at the Global Citizens concert in Ghana, Chief Executive Officer Harvey Manson revealed that the academy has kicked off the first process in the long road to adding an Afrobeats category to the Grammys. According to Harvey, the academy had a meeting with Afrobeats creatives that includes artists, producers, songwriters, and executives where they talked about Afrobeats and its many Genres.

He further revealed that the members of the academy will have to submit a proposal for the addition of a new category before deliberations will kick off. However, the listening session with the Afrobeats leaders is the first step.

What this means: the addition of an Afrobeats category to the Grammys will mean that songs that fall under the Afrobeats subgenre will be eligible for nomination.

While the Afrobeats is primarily a description of Nigerian and Ghanaian mainstream music, the West has often muddled it up with any sound coming from Saharan Africa. The implication is that South African genres such as HouseAmapiano, and Kwaito might be considered Afrobeats. Similarly, Congolese sounds like the Soukous or the East African Singile might be termed Afrobeats.

It will be up to the Academy to adequately identify the essential elements that make a song Afrobeats as doing this will be the first step in truly awarding the right songs irrespective of where it’s made.

Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last’ gets UK Certification

Nigerian megastar Burna Boy has achieved another landmark achievement after his hit single ‘Last Last’ was certified Gold in the United Kingdom. Grammy-winning Afrobeats icon Burna Boy has added another colorful feather to his hat after his hit single was recently declared eligible for Gold certification in the UK.

According to reputable chart news platform Chart Data, ‘Last Last’ was to receive a Gold certification after selling over 500,000 units in the United Kingdom.

The certification offers further proof of the song’s acclaim and success internationally and is also a marker of Burna Boy’s global fame.

Greater heights ahead: Burna Boy has announced that he intends to release ‘Love, Damini’ deluxe. The deluxe will likely come with a ‘Last Last’ remix that features Nigerian British rapper Dave.

The arrival of the remix will further propel the song to fame in the United Kingdom and give it a shot for a platinum plaque.

Tems, Burna Boy, and Rema continue run on Billboard Hot 100

On the chart week dated September 24th, 2022, Burna Boy‘s ‘Last Last’Tems‘ ‘Free Mind’, and Rema‘s ‘Calm Down’ remix featuring Selena Gomez have all remained on the Billboard Hot 100.

Tems’ ‘Free Mind’ leads the Nigerian entries after climbing up 4 places from NO.56 to NO.52 and extending its run on the chart to 9 weeks.

Following behind is Burna Boy’s hit single ‘Last Last’ which slightly dipped from NO.53 to NO.54 in a run that has entered its 10th week.

Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ remix on which he features famous Pop star Selena Gomez suffers a slight slump as it fell from NO.91 to NO.92 in its second week on the chart.

US Afrobeats Chart: On the US Afrobeats Chart, Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ remix extends its run at number one to three weeks.

Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last’ holds the NO.2 spot while Tems’ ‘Free Mind’ comes in at NO.3. Wizkid‘s ‘Essence’ remix takes the NO.4 spot while CKay‘s ‘Love Nwantiti (Ah Ah Ah)’ rounds up the top 5.

Fireboy DML Tells Apple Music about collaborations with Ed Sheeran, Madonna, and Rema

  • Fireboy DML on the numerous remixes of “Peru,” and working with Ed Sheeran  “It was the Ed Sheeran version first, that’s the one that matters, that’s the first. That’s the one. Everything else was about strategic stuff and all that, but the collaboration was the Ed Sheeran one. My team reached out to me like, “Yo.” Jamal Edwards, rest his soul, very close to Ed Sheeran, played the song to him, sent it to him and he loved the song. He took his stance to write a verse, and then he sent me a DM, and sent me VM of his verse. I’m like, “Yo, Ed Sheeran in this record, this is it.” Ed Sheeran is someone I sonically connect to, I’ve looked up to this man for a long time, for as long as I can remember. He actually made me fall in love with the acoustic guitar, and it really meant a lot to me, not just for me, but for the culture as well, because I knew what it would mean for Afrobeats when the record came out. I’m glad to be at the forefront pushing the culture, pushing the genre, this is a record that will stand the test of time. Years later they’ll say, “Oh, Afrobeats opened up in the United States worldwide, internationally, and Peru by Fireboy is one of those records that made it happen.” I’m just really glad, that’s what we want, to open opportunities and build bridges.”
    • Fireboy DML on how the song “Peru” has nothing to do with the country, and what it’s actually about

“[The word “peru” is] also an allusion to a friend of mine, also an artist, Peruzzi. He has uses this tagline in his songs, so I just use it as… it was like a pun, wordplay kind of thing…I was just really telling the story of a young boy who would find himself in a place that he’s never been before. I recorded that song because it was my first time in the United States

Controversy over Remi Tinubu’s comments on Igbos in Lagos in trending video

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the 2023 elections, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has threatened Igbos living in Lagos State with eviction and inheritance of their wealth.

She issued the threat in a video in which she was speaking with a lady of Igbo extraction, who had obviously wronged her.

In the trending video making the rounds on the internet, she said the deities of Lagos will be called upon to chase out the Igbo.

She declared: “We will invoke all the deities of Lagos to chase Igbo people out. “Igbos who refuse to learn our language.

“Igbos who didn’t marry Yoruba, we will inherit them.

“Given how much we love Igbo, you now want to spoil everything.

“You are not the only tribe in this place.

“Hausas are here, we accommodate them.

“Calabars are here, we accommodate them.

“But Igbo are proving difficult.

“We will inherit you.

“We will invoke Lagos deities to chase away the Igbos who refused to learn our language.

“Those that insist not to marry the Yorubas, we will inherit their belongings.”

However, the date, time, venue and reason for the utterance by the senator did not accompany the video, with many saying it was an old one.

There were also others sources who said it was a family affair, with Senator Tinubu speaking in a convivial manner with those she was addressing.

At some point, she even said she could see she was being filmed.

But a lot of social media users have reacted to the resurfaced video.

@Sports_Doctor2 said: “This is RCCG ‘Pastor’ Remi Tinubu, Tinubu’s wife and the woman that wants to be ‘First Lady’.

“God Abeg.”

@AkiimReid1, wrote: “This is demonic and the government didn’t hear this? How else can anyone define tribalism and hate? Hating Igbos can’t wipe them off the surface of the earth. These words actually stinks of hate for the Igbos. I am not Igbo but support fairness, oneness, equity and Justice.”

Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last’ continues to impress on Billboard Hot 100

In the Billboard Chart dated the week of 3rd September 2022, ‘Last Last’ made an impressive leap on the chart, moving up 12 places from 75th to 63rd position.

This leap is coming off the back of the Burna Boy’s latest sold-out concert in Lowlands in the Netherlands. Also, ‘Last Last’ received an electrifying response from the huge crowd that turned out for the Notting Hill Carnival in London.

The leap signals the continued rise in the song’s popularity which also suggests that a top 50 placement might not be out of reach. Is ‘Last Last’ the Song of the Summer?: At the recently held MTV VMAs at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, Jack Harlow‘s ‘First Class’ took home the award for the Song of the Summer.

Mixed reactions trailed his win with several fans arguing that he doesn’t deserve the award. Amongst the artists that fans believe were deserving of the award was Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last’ which has achieved impressive success across Africa, America, Europe, and the Caribbean.

Wizkid makes African history with ‘Made In Lagos’ certification

On Monday, August 29th, 2022, the Recording Industry Association of America announced the Gold Certification of Wizkid’s ‘Made In Lagos’ album after it sold over 500,000 copies in the United States.

This giant stride earns Wizkid the singular honor of being the only Nigerian and African artist to have his album sell above 500,000 copies in the United States.

As expected both fans, admirers, colleagues, and media personalities have showered Mr. Ayo “Wizkid” Balogun with praises for once again putting Nigeria and Africa on the map while also setting the pace for other artists.

The role of ‘Essence’: It’s easily deductible that the American popularity of ‘Made In Lagos’ is driven by the hugely successful ‘Essence’ which enjoyed US success. ‘Essence’ remix featuring American Pop star Justin Bieber peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is two-time platinum.

With the certification of ‘Made In Lagos’, Nigerian fans will be hoping that other albums can follow in its steps and enjoy international success as Afrobeats continues to soar internationally.

Ne-Yo’s wife files for divorce, claims he fathered a child with another woman

According to the divorce document obtained by PageSix, Renay claimed that Ne-Yo “recently fathered a minor” with his “paramour.” She called their marriage “irretrievably broken with no hope for reconciliation.”

This is coming days after Renay had accused the music star of cheating on her with “numerous” other women throughout their nearly decade-long relationship.

“8 years of lies and deception. 8 years of unknowingly sharing my life and husband with numerous of women who sell their bodies to him unprotected… every last one of them!” she wrote.

“To say I’m heartbroken and disgusted is an understatement. To ask me to stay and accept it is absolutely insane. The mentality of a narcissist. I will no longer lie to the public or pretend that this is something it isn’t,” she continued.

On Sunday, July 31, Neyo responded to his wife’s post on Twitter.

“For the sake of our children, my family and I will work through our challenges behind closed doors,” he tweeted.

“Personal matters are not meant to be addressed and dissected in public forums. I simply ask that you please respect me and my family’s privacy at this time.”

Renay and Neyo started dating in 2015. Neyo proposed that same year.

The couple briefly split in 2020 before remarrying in 2022, throwing a lavish ceremony in Las Vegas to celebrate their reunion.
