Breaking: Supreme Court dismisses Buhari’s request to alter amended Electoral Act

The Supreme Court has struck out the suit by President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami seeking to void the provision of Section 84(12) of the amended Electoral Act 2022.

A seven-member panel of the apex court, headed by Justice Musa Dattijo Mohammed, was unanimous in holding in its ruling Friday that Buhari, having participated in the making of the law by assenting to it, could not turn around to fault its provisions.

The court, which upheld the objections raised by the National Assembly (NASS) and other defendants against the suit, declined to determine it on the merit but declared that the Supreme Court lacked the jurisdiction to hear it and that the suit was an abuse of court process.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, in the lead judgment, held that it was an attack on the democratic principle of Separation of Powers for the President to seek to direct/request the Legislature to make a particular law or alter any law. The jurists held: “The President lacks the power to direct the National Assembly to amend or enact an act that violates the principle of separation of powers. “There is no part of the Constitution that makes the exercise of legislative powers subject to the directive of the President”.…

Veteran Actors who are aged over 70 and still active in Nollywood

While some say its age should be counted from 2002, when the sobriquet; Nollywood surfaced in The New York Times article by Matt Steinglass. Others argue that the age should be attributed to the release of the direct-to-video film of 1992, Living in Bondage.

Despite arguments and debates about the age of the industry that we may not necessarily be able to confirm, we at least know the ages of some of the industry’s veteran players.

Here is a list of five 70 plus Nollywood legends, active and still thriving in the industry.

1. Pete Edochie

The Nigerian actor is considered one of Africa’s most talented actors, being honored with an Industry Merit Award by Africa Magic and Lifetime Achievement by Africa Film Academy.

The 75 year old seems unstoppable as he is still bagging roles even at his age. He has starred in several movies and most recently, he appeared in Genevieve Nnaji’s Lionheart and Unroyal in 2020.

2. Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett

The 81-year-old veteran actor, journalist and presenter is a screen goddess who is still very active in the industry. She is a feminist and was the first editor of Africa Woman magazine in the 1970s. Recently, she appeared in Kemi Adetiba’s King of Boys 2: The Return of The King.

No one wants to intentionally make a bad movie – Stella Damasus

The veteran actress took to her Instagram handle to share a heartwarming video detailing how much work goes into Nollywood films and the sometimes, non-constructive criticism they get online.

So I’ve gone online a couple of times and I hear people criticizing the Nigerian movie industry, criticizing our films and condemning it,” Damasus said in the Instagram post.

Not even constructive criticisms but really negative things and it hurts me because they think it is easy to get a bunch of people together, get crew, get cast, get them to different locations, shoot morning to morning, suffer.

I don’t think anyone wants to waste time and money and intentionally make a bad film. We do our best with the little we have. We try, we push and that’s why we still have a thriving industry today, because of the hard work.”

Damasus’s video in solidarity with Nollywood has expectedly been well received by filmmakers who took to her comments section with positive reactions.

The actress is unarguably one of the very few vocal voices in the industry that indiscriminately promote Nollywood content.

Meanwhile, the actress recently launched a YouTube monologue series tagged ‘In The Chair’. The series debuted with a monologue about sexual abuse.

Diego Maradona: Eight doctors and nurses who cared for Argentina legend face homicide charges after his death

Maradona, who captained Argentina’s 1986 World Cup-winning team, died in November 2020 at the age of 60.

The star, who underwent surgery for a subdural haematoma a few weeks prior to his death, died due to cardiac arrest.

Prosecutors now claim his death was the result of “omissions” by his caregivers.

In the 236-page document seen by Reuters, the judge in charge of the case questioned “the behaviors – active or by omission – of each of the accused which led to and contributed to the realization of the harmful result”.

It said that eight people, including doctors, nurses and a psychologist who cared for Maradona at the time of his death, are accused of “simple homicide” – which means taking a life with intent.

A medical team appointed to investigate Maradona’s death in 2021 said the star’s medical team acted in an “inappropriate, deficient and reckless manner”.

The defendants named in the ruling were Maradona’s neurosurgeon and personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, psychologist Carlos Diaz, nurses Gisella Madrid and Ricardo Almiron, their boss Mariano Perroni, and doctors Pedro Di Spagna and Nancy Forlini.

They have all denied responsibility for Maradona’s death and the judge said that lawyers for some of them had requested the case be dismissed.

‘A guilty party is being sought at all costs’

Vadim Mischanchuk, an attorney for Cosachov, said they would appeal the decision, adding the psychiatrist’s area of care had no relation with Maradona’s cause of death.

“A guilty party is being sought at all costs and objectivity is being lost,” the lawyer said.

Mario Baudry, a lawyer for one of Maradona’s sons, told Reuters that the World Cup winner was “in a situation of helplessness” by the time of his death.

Following Maradona’s death, there were three days of national mourning before he was laid to rest in a cemetery near Buenos Aires.

Maradona had long struggled with his health, including alcohol and cocaine addiction. He was …

24 States get N477b refund on FG projects — Lai Mohammed

The present administration has so far reimbursed state governments to the tune of N447 billion for expenses incurred on Federal Government projects, Minister of Information and Culture,  Lai Mohammed, has said.

He disclosed this to Correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday.

Mohammed said in Abuja: “I think it’s important to say that well it’s true that we’re just reporting this particular memo, which is the refund being sought by Yobe State Government.

“Yobe State Government is asking for the sum of N18,663,843,109 as reimbursement for five federal roads, which they rehabilitated or constructed.

“A committee was set up to inspect the claim.

They were actually found to be true.

“They reviewed the N20 billion they asked for and certified N18 billion as refund due to Yobe State for undertaking the construction/rehabilitation of these federal roads on behalf of the Federal Government.

“But this is not the first time.

“We have, since 2015, made refunds to about 24 states.

“If my records are correct, and I want to put on record here, that but for the benevolence of this administration, many states would have sunk under.

“You will remember that by the time we came in, about 27 states of the federation were unable to pay salaries.

“They owed salaries and could not pay.

“It took this Federal Government to really bail many of them out so they could pay not only salaries, but also they could pay the arrears.

“When the price of crude crashed, this same government gave each state what is called a bailout and some of the states today that complain that they’ve never benefited from the Federal Government, especially the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) states, are the ones that have taken the lion share of this reimbursement.

“The records I have here say that Akwa Ibom got N61 billion from this Federal Government for works done on behalf of the government and especially before we came in.

“Rivers had upwards of N100 billion.

“But we show that …

NANS president to students: Expect good news soon

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Sunday Asefon, has told students to expect good news soon.

Asefon spoke on a day the Federal Governor through the Minister of Labor, Chris Ngige, also gave the same hope.

Ngige spoke against the backdrop of progress in the negotiation with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

Asefon, writing on Facebook on Wednesday, said: “Good news soon Nigerian students!!!” Ngige also on Wednesday said the Federal Government has been meeting with the ASUU over its lingering strike and assured Nigerians that the dispute with the lecturers will be resolved soon.

Ngige, who spoke after the Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House in Abuja, said the next meeting with ASUU is scheduled for Thursday.

He said: “As the issue is bordered on money, remunerations, welfare, we did another conciliation meeting inviting the Ministry of Finance, Budget Office of the Federation, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission and again, with their employers on the 1st of March.

“After that, it became clear that two cardinal things were still keen: the issue of renegotiation of their welfare package as in the 2009 agreement; that agreement says you can review every five years, so, that issue stuck out like a sore thumb.

“Then another issue arose in that agreement – the payment platform of university transparency, accountability solution, which they say they’ve invented.

“They said they don’t want to be on IPPIS; that IPPIS was amputating their salaries and taking off certain allowances, and so, that it is not capturing their peculiarities.

“So, we now have to ask them to go back to these places, form committees with them.

“Education took them on the issue of 2009 agreement, which is renegotiation of their conditions of service, emolument, their remuneration allowances.

“Therefore, salaries, income and wages, and Ministry of Finance that produce the money are involved.

“So, they went back.”

The former governor also dismissed talks that the Federal Government has a different payment table for trade unions in tertiary institutions.

Ngige noted that …

Ex-footballer Samuel Eto’o pleads guilty to tax fraud to avoid prison

Former Cameroon football star Samuel Eto’o has struck a deal with Spanish prosecutors to avoid going to jail for tax fraud he committed while playing for Barcelona, a court in the city announced Monday.

Eto’o, who played for Barcelona from 2004 to 2009, received a fine and a 22-month suspended sentence but will not serve any time, as is customary in Spain for prison terms of under two years for non-violent crimes.

Reports in Spain claim Eto’o, 41, will pay a fine of 1.8 million euros ($1.9 million).

The record four-time African footballer of the year and Jose Maria Mesalles — his former representative, who for his part was sentenced to 12 months and a fine — must reimburse Spanish tax authorities for the amount defrauded, around 3.9 million euros.

Prosecutors accused Eto’o of failing to declare income from the transfer of image rights between 2006 and 2009.

According to them, Eto’o transferred his image rights to a company based in Hungary which declared his earnings in that country, where the tax rate is one of the “lowest in Europe”.

A second Spanish company declared them in Spain at the corporate tax rate, less than the income tax that should have been paid.

Eto’o was the “real holder of the image rights”, maintained the prosecution, according to whom the transfer was fraudulent and only designed to pay less tax.

Eto’o, who last year was elected head of the Cameroonian football federation, is one of a number of football stars to have a run-in with Spanish tax authorities, following the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar.…

Hundreds of thousands evacuated in China after heaviest rains in decades

The heaviest rainfall in decades has triggered floods and landslides in southern China, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people, state media reported.

The downpours have dangerously swelled waterways in the low-lying Pearl River basin in recent days, threatening manufacturing, shipping and logistics operations at a time when supply chains are already stressed because of China’s strict Covid-19 controls.

The average rainfall in Guangdong, Fujian and Guangxi provinces between early May and the middle of June reached 621 millimeters (24 inches), the highest since 1961, according to China’s National Meteorological Center.

State media photos showed people huddled on camp beds in schools converted into temporary shelters in Guangdong’s Shaoguan city, and hundreds of tents erected on a sports ground.

In the neighboring Guangxi region, muddy water was seen flooding urban areas and emergency rescuers were seen evacuating villagers on rubber dinghies, according to state media images.

Guangdong authorities said Monday that more than 200,000 people have been evacuated over the course of the disaster, and that the damage so far is estimated at 1.7 billion yuan ($254 million).

The evacuees were among almost 480,000 people impacted by the rains and floods, according to the officials.

Shaoguan issued a red flood alert — the most serious — Tuesday morning, after multiple rural counties and the major city of Foshan upgraded their flood warnings in recent days.

Guangxi was hit by the heaviest floods since 2005, local media reported.

Meteorological authorities said Monday that 28 of Guangxi’s rivers had exceeded warning levels, with rains continuing on Tuesday.

Jiangxi province issued a red alert for flooding on Monday.

And in Fujian, more than 220,000 people have been evacuated since the beginning of this month because of floods, China’s official Xinhua news agency said Monday.

Earlier this month, at least 21 people died after flooding induced by torrential rain in the central Chinese province of Hubei.

Catastrophic flooding in central China’s Henan province last summer killed 398 people and caused economic losses of more than $10 billion.…

Why Emefiele was not sacked as CBN governor – Buhari

Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari said the presidential bid of Godwin Emefiele did not affect his role Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Emefiele sought to be the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and drew widespread criticisms for being partisan while heading the CBN.

While critics called for Emefiele’s sacking, Buhari said such decisions do not rest solely on him as Nigeria’s President.

“The CBN governor is appointed by the President. But this appointment is subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate,” Buhari said as quoted in a Q&A with Bloomberg.

Among other conditions for the removal of a sitting CBN governor, the CBN Act did not list political participation as part of the grounds for the removal of a CBN governor which some of Emefiele’s critics pointed to.

Buhari said such decisions can only be determined by the board of directors of the CBN.

“Ultimately, it will be for the CBN’s board of directors to determine whether a CBN governor’s actions have fallen foul of the laws in place to ensure he can most effectively carry out his duties,” Buhari said.

The president, however, noted that “there is a subtext to the accusations” of Emefiele being unfit to remain CBN governor.

“Because the governor follows a model outside of the economic orthodoxy, he is labelled political. But the orthodoxy has proved wrong time and again,” Buhari said.

“Instead, the governor is following an alternative economic model that puts people at the heart of policy. Nigeria should be free to choose its development model and how to construct our economy, so it functions for Nigerians.”

Emefiele stepped down his presidential ambition before the APC presidential primary election that was won by former Lagos State governor Bola Tinubu in early June.

The CBN governor also withdrew a suit against the attorney-general and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over an alleged plan to disqualify him from contesting for the office of Nigeria’s president.…

‘Report yourself to the nearest police station’ – Police instructs Portable after giving order to beat up young man

This is coming on the heels of a recent video where the controversial singer was spotted ordering his crew to beat up a young man. In a statement released by the spokesman of the Ogun State police command, the singer’s actions won’t be condoned.

Such unruly and violent behavior is not only barbaric but unbecoming of somebody who is supposed to be a role model for the youths and therefore should not be tolerated,” part of the statement read.

“In view of this, the Command is using this medium to advise Okikiola Habeeb a.k.a Portable to report himself at the nearest police station in Ogun State, failure of which his arrest will be ordered.”

“The flagrant display of impunity by portable in the viral video is condemnable and if not checked, it will send a wrong signal to the youths who are looking up to him as a role model.”

The singer recently welcomed a child with his baby mama.

Portable is a Nigerian artist who rose to fame after getting Olamide and dancer Poco Lee to feature in the now-famous hit single ‘Zazu Zeh.’

From fighting with show promoters, and cursing on social media to crashing his cars on several occasions, it’s been jumping from frying pan to fire for the singer.

Strike: Labour appeals to ASUU to shift ground

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has appealed to the striking university lecturers to shift ground in their demands by making some concessions so that students can return to school.

Monday Ogbodum, Cross River chapter Chairman of the TUC, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Calabar on Tuesday.

Ogbodum said the Academy Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had “clearly” made their points known to the world with the prolonged strike and advised government not to always allow issues to degenerate to strike before taking action.

The labour leader further added that government should always put human face to its action or inaction in dealing with labour unions, to avoid prolonged industrial action in the country. He noted that the peculiarity of university education was such that strike should not be allowed as an option for agitation or meeting the needs of workers.

The TUC Chairman said it would be difficult to regain the loss ground in Nigeria tertiary education system because of the industrial action by the university lecturers in the last two years.

According to him, “While I’m appealing to the ASUU to shift ground, I also ask the government to always put human face in their action.

“ASUU has proven its points to the government; the strike is justifiable but ASUU should also know that negotiations are always a win-win situation and not winner takes all.

“Our children have suffered enough and most of us do not have the resources to send our children abroad or private universities.

“I make bold to tell you that even the lecturers have their own pains from this strike.”

Ogbodum, however, condemned the no- work-no-pay policy of the government. The union had declared a total strike in February to compel government to act on a variety of issues that had lingered between both parties for years.…

A 26-year-old, Musa Lurwanu Maje, popularly known on social media as Musa L. Maje, has been nabbed by operatives of the Kano State Police Command for blackmailing Nigerians on Facebook with their nude photographs and videos.

The suspect had created a Facebook page using the profile of a female with which he lured people to send their nudes.

Kiyawa said: “One Zahra Mansur, 20, also complained that she received phone calls from her close associates that someone used her name, pictures, and videos to create Facebook accounts, defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.”  The state Commissioner of Police, Sama’ila Dikko, was said to have instructed a team of detectives, led by SP Shehu Dahiru, to arrest the culprit.

We’ve forced government into renegotiating 2009 agreement — ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities says it has forced the Federal Government into renegotiating the 2009 agreement with it.

The union made this known in a memo titled: “Strike bulletin number 6,” by its National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke.

In the memo made available to all branches of the union, Osodeke said the renegotiation had reached an advanced stage.

He said so far, the union has had a total of five meetings with the representatives of the Federal Government, while two meetings were held with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu. The memo read in part: “Our iron-cast resolve has forced the government to sit down and negotiate with us.

“We have had five meetings with the Federal Government team and two meetings with the Minister of Education.

“The renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement is progressing smoothly and has reached an advanced stage. However, we must remain focused to the end of this struggle.

“The University Transparency and Accountability Solution has been tested for the third time.

“So far, the National Information Technology Development Agency has tested UTAS and University Peculiar Personnel and Payroll System, and will start testing the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System by next week.

“We are undeterred by the antics of some government officials in this respect.

“It is clear that hunger, misinformation, distortion of facts, intimidation and other sundry acts of arm-twisting have failed to break our resolve to date; they should not break us now.

“Ignore fake news and divisive information emanating from social media and a section of the press. If in doubt over any issue, contact your chairperson for correct information. “We are at the threshold of victory. Let us keep faith with the union. A people united can never be defeated.”…

APC submits name of Tinubu’s running mate to INEC

The All Progressives Congress has submitted the name of the running mate of its presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

This was confirmed by a source in the Tinubu Campaign Organization to The Eagle Online in the early hours of Thursday.

The name submitted to the electoral umpire was Alhaji Kabir Ibrahim Masari, who is said to be from Katsina State and a kinsman of the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Aminu Masari.

But The Eagle Online was also told that the submission of Masari’s name was an interim measure in order to meet the deadline of INEC for the submission of names of candidates for national elections. The INEC had given the deadline as July 17, 2022 (today).

The source described Masari as a “place-holder” as the search for a vice presidential candidate for Tinubu continues.

As reported by The Eagle Online earlier on, the search for a running mate for Tinubu has been zoned to the North, with the likelihood of a Muslim from among serving or past governors clinching it.

This has largely given an inkling of a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

This is as those said to be in contention are all Muslims.

Among them are the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje; Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai; Jigawa State Governor, Abubakar Bagudu; Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum; and former Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima.

The Peoples Democratic Party had on Thursday unveiled Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State as the running mate of Atiku Abubakar for the 2023 elections.…

Rollas said: To get involved with a child as young as 16 years is not something I and the association I represent would stand for.

“This is a very sad development involving a member of ours, but I wouldn’t want to comment any further on this case.”

Armstrong, until his arrest, was a Special Assistant to the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel.

He lost his wife and colleague, Rita Armstrong, in 2018.…
