Four die as flood overruns FCT, damages 26 vehicles, 166 houses

Four residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja have lost their lives to floods.

The FCT Emergency Management Agency on Monday said it established this in the course of its rescue operations.

The operations was from September 12 to 13, 2021.

“Following long hours of heavy rainfall on Sunday, September 12, Trademoore, Light Gold and Wisdom Estates, as well as Lugbe community were heavily flooded, resulting in the loss of lives,” FEMA Director-General, Alhaji Abbas Idriss, said in a statement on Monday in Abuja. Idriss added: “FEMA has established, in the course of rescue operations which began from 9p.m. of September 12 up to September 13, that four persons lost their lives to the floods and the recovered bodies have been taken away by family members for burial.

“Also, over 26 vehicles, including an articulated towing van, were swept away by the flood, besides a tarred road in Trademoore Estate which was completely washed away as a result of the strength of the flood water.“

The FEMA boss said a total of166 houses were affected, noting that the agency was still estimating the losses suffered by residents as a result of the floods.

Idriss conveyed the deepest sympathies of the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammed Bello, to the residents and families of those who were killed.

He appealed to FCT residents, especially developers, to desist from violating the approved building codes.

“We are also appealing to them to stop erecting retention walls to protect storm water from flowing. By doing so they are causing more havoc to the community,” he said.

Idriss advised that as the FCT enters the final phase of the rainy season, in which the rain is at its peak, residents should avoid dumping refuse in drainages.

He also advised them to clear all surrounding drainages and other blockages that obstruct the free flow of water.

The D-G enjoined residents to avoid driving or walking through flood waters.

He also called on those living along  river banks to relocate to higher ground when threatened by floods.…

BBNaija 2021: I feel like a widow – Saskay on Jaypaul’s eviction

Saskay has expressed her grief over the eviction of her house sweetheart Jaypaul. While there were, thankfully, no tears, the 21-year-old housemate went in quite early after the Sunday night show and needed some pep talk from Angel, Nini and Saga. In her chat with Angel, the 21-year-old housemate revealed that she felt like a widow following the singer’s eviction especially after how much they bonded in the week leading to his eviction.

The couple melted hearts last week as Jaypaul went full-on romance mode with flowers and promises to move heaven and earth if she chose him over his contender, Cross. The lovebirds also sealed the week with a brief but romantic kiss, Saskay’s first since the show kicked off.

Sadly, the onscreen romance was short-lived as Jaypaul and Jackie B got evicted during the recent Sunday night eviction show. The housemates coincidentally sailed through the famous king-size eviction after earning immunity by emerging heads of house.

BBNaija 2021: Jaypaul and Jackie B have been evicted

This weekend’s live show has seen the eviction of Jaypaul and Jackie B. The housemates join 13 already evicted contestants of the ‘Shine Ya Eye’ season. Kicking off with a recap of the week’s activities and a brief chit-chat with the housemates, show host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu announced Jaypaul as the 14th housemate to exit Biggie’s house.

After another round of chit-chatting with housemates, Ebuka announced the eviction of Jackie B.

Coincidentally, both housemates got spared from last week’s king-size eviction after winning immunity by emerging heads of house during the week’s games.

Away from the seriousness of the evictions, a key highlight of the show was Ebuka discussing housemates entangled in situationships including Cross, Queen, Whitemoney, Jackie B, Angel and Yousef.

BBNaija 2021: Pere finally shares details of microphone strike conversation with Maria

It’s been two weeks since Maria’s exit but it appears that the housemates can’t seem to get over her at least not former love interest Pere.

In a recent truth or dare game, the housemate shared details of the Saturday night microphone infringement that finally led to Biggie issuing them strikes.

According to Pere, Maria had forced him to take off his microphone to ask him for sex.

“Maria told me to make love to her,” Pere shared with housemates.

Recall that Maria had asked Pere to take off his mic for a brief conversation against Biggie’s instructions on whispering.

Interestingly, Maria has repeatedly debunked claims by the former US soldier that they had shared any form of intimacy especially ones made by Pere involving intense smooching.

During the first week of her media rounds, she claimed that she would never have gotten to that point had she stayed longer in the house.

Meanwhile, other housemates are on to building new triangles and strengthening existing ships. With the exit of Michael, it appears Jackie B has turned to the ever loving arms of the house’s daddy figure Whitemoney. Needless to say that the latest closeness means trouble to the male housemate’s current sweetheart Queen. The beauty queen recently warned Whitemoney about the closeness which makes her uncomfortable.

MURIC to FG: We join Falana in seeking pardon for jailed 54 Soldiers

Sequel to a letter written by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), to President Muhammadu Buhari, seeking presidential pardon for soldiers jailed for refusing to fight Boko Haram, the Muslim Rights Concern has added its voice to the call for pardon for the soldiers.

MURIC’s call was made on Thursday in a statement through its Director and Founder, Prof. Ishaq Akintola.

MURIC said: “We endorse every sentence in the letter written by foremost human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), asking President Muhammadu Buhari to pardon soldiers jailed for refusing to fight Boko Haram with poor weapons. This case has unassailable merit and Mr. Falana’s letter has addressed all the necessary issues.

“We strongly believe that the punishment meted out to the soldiers were a miscarriage of justice. We also frown at the way the soldiers were discharged from prison after serving their term without any concern for their welfare. It is an invitation to anarchy. These are soldiers trained as members of the special forces. They were not ordinary soldiers. Releasing them into the society was therefore a most dangerous move. They may fall into wrong hands.

“However, we appeal to the released men to continue to be of good conduct, to remain law abiding and to always remember that Allah has a reason for everything. While they were in jail, many soldiers died fighting the insurgents. Some lost their limbs. But Allah has preserved them. It is also worthy of gratitude to Allah that none of them died in jail.

“Therefore our message to the 54 soldiers is this, ‘Have faith and thank God. It is possible that the Supreme Creator, in His divine wisdom, decided to keep you in jail in order to keep you alive or to keep you away from a worse fate.’ After all Prophet Yusuf (Joseph, peace be upon him) was imprisoned for no just cause and he came out victorious (Glorious Qur’an 12:35; Genesis 39:20).

“The Muslims among them should remember what Allah said in the Hadith Qudsy, ‘Whoever is not pleased …

Electronic voting possible in Nigeria, says El Rufai

Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna State says electronic voting is possible in Nigeria, with the right determination.

According to him, the success recorded in the last Local Government election conducted via electronic voting in the state was a demonstration that it was possible across the country.

The governor made the statement in a statewide broadcast on Wednesday to thank the people of the state state for giving the All Progressive Congress victory at the poll.

He welcomed the election as a unifying moment, describing the results from Kaduna South Senatorial District in particular as significant in advancing political consensus in the state and overcoming divisions.

According to him, his administration had placed the credibility and integrity of the electoral process above the discredited practice of previous governments of winner takes all.

He commended the electorates for showing, for the second time, that there was no obstacle to the successful adoption of electronic voting technology in Nigeria.

El-Rufai recalled that voters in the state first made history on May 12, 2018 when they cast their ballots on electronic voting machines to elect chairmen and councilors for the 23 local government councils in the state.

He also explained that the election had placed Kaduna State as the first in Nigeria to use electronic voting and first subnational in Africa to do so.

According to him, it also positioned Nigeria as the second country in Africa after Namibia to use the technology.

El-Rufai said: “The local government elections of 4th September 2021 further validated the Kaduna State Government’s decision to invest in Electronic Voting Machines to promote electoral integrity and transparency.

“Kaduna State is proudly upholding a new chapter in elections in Nigeria, using electronic voting technology, championed by a government that is determined to respect the outcome, win or lose.

“As governor of Kaduna State, I have always taken the view that we all win when democracy triumphs.”

El-Rufai congratulated all the winners in the local government elections and challenged them to use their period in office to serve the people, …
