AMVCA announces call for submission ahead of 8th edition

After a one-year hiatus, the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) is ready to roll out its red carpets. Ahead of the award ceremony’s eighth edition, organizers of the event have announced a call for submissions.

Filmmakers are expected to submit their films in line with the awards’ guidelines between December 3, 2021 and January 14, 2022.

According to the organizers, films, made-for-television movies or television series are eligible for entry to the AMVCA if they were broadcast, publicly screened or exhibited from December 1, 2019 to 30 November 2021.

Speaking on the forthcoming eighth edition, Chief Executive Officer, MultiChoice Nigeria, John Ugbe, said: “Last year was indeed a tough one for the world with the global pandemic, however the industry continues to thrive against all odds.

“We are proud of the improvements seen across different fields in the industry since the inception of the awards in 2013.

“The eighth edition of the AMVCAs once again demonstrates our commitment to spotlight the immense talent we have in the African film and TV industry and promises to leave a much bigger impact than previous editions.”

The eighth edition slated for 2022, will also see the addition of a new category to recognize the growing acceptance of content creators across Africa. The category is tagged Best Online Social Content Creator.

The seventh AMVCA saw Play Network’s ‘Living in Bondage’ sequel scoop the highest number of awards with a total of 8 wins including Best Overall movie. The show’s organizers also introduced the Best Dressed Male and Best Dressed Female categories.

Mission: Impossible

is a series of American action spy films based on and a follow-on from the television series of the same name created by Bruce Geller. The series is mainly produced by and stars Tom Cruise, whose character is Ethan Hunt, an agent of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF). The films have been directed, written, and scored from various filmmakers and crew, while incorporating musical themes from the original series by Lalo Schifrin.

Beginning in 1996, the films (taking place starting six years after the events of the previous TV sequel series) follow the missions of the IMF’s main field team under the leadership of Hunt to stop an enemy force all the while preventing an impending global disaster. The series focuses on Hunt as the lead character as opposed to the ensemble cast structure of the television series, although some characters, such as Luther Stickell (played by Ving Rhames) and Benji Dunn (played by Simon Pegg) have recurring roles in the films.

The series has received a positive reception from critics and audiences alike, and is the 16th-highest-grossing film series of all time, with a worldwide gross of over $3.5 billion to date, and is often cited as one of the best action franchises to date. The sixth and most recent film, titled Mission: Impossible – Fallout, was released on July 27, 2018. The seventh and the upcoming film, with the working title Mission: Impossible 7, is scheduled to be released on September 30, 2022.

All of the Mission: Impossible films are co-produced and released by Paramount Pictures and are rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association.

Another Nollywood veteran dies from protracted illness

Another veteran Nollywood actor, Rich Oganiru, has died.

His death comes a few weeks after that of another Nollywood household name, Rachael Oniga, in Lagos.

Oganiru reportedly died on August 10, 2021 after being sick for months.

The news of his death was announced via Facebook by his friend, EmstarVee. The post reads: “BREAKING……..Sunset At Noon, Tuesday 10th August 2021! Ahem… I’ve lost a good friend like a brother for years, a great Nollywood actor par excellence. I’m just speechless. R.I.P Amb. Rich Oganiru.” Meanwhile, weeks ago, a video of Oganiru lying on his sick bed while begging for financial assistance was shared online.

The Nollywood actor, who has appeared in a number of films, was arrested in 2012 for allegedly murdering his wife. According to news reports at the time, Oganiru was arrested after a petition was filed by the family and relatives of his late wife, alleging that she was poisoned by the actor in order for him to inherit her fortune. Mr. Oganiru has always maintained his innocence, claiming that he never killed his multimillionaire wife.…
