Tems’ 2020 song ‘Free Mind’ debuts on Billboard Hot 100

Details: Rave of the moment Tems has achieved her first solo entry on the Billboard chart with ‘Free Mind’ which was released in 2020 as part of the singles for her EP ‘For Broken Ears’Free Mind’ debuted at number 90 in the latest issue of Billboard Hot 100 and it’s her first solo entry on the charts.

What this means for Tems: With the debut of ‘Free Mind’ on the Billboard Hot 100, Tems becomes the second Nigerian artist to have four entries on the revered Billboard Hot 100. She got her previous entries from guest appearances in Drake‘s ‘Fountain’Wizkid‘s ‘Essence’, and Future‘s number one single ‘Wait For U’.

Tems is now tied with Wizkid who was the sole record holder with Drake’s global hit ‘One Dance’, Beyonce’s ‘Black Skin Girl’, Chris Brown’s ‘Call Me Everyday’, and hit single ‘Essence’.

Tems features on the soundtrack of Black Panther sequel ‘Wakanda Forever’

Details: Nigerian superstar Tems features on the soundtrack of the yet-to-be-released ‘Black Panther’ sequel ‘Wakanda Forever’. This surprise was revealed when Marvel released the trailer for Wakanda Forever on Sunday 24th July 2022 and it featured Tems singing a cover for Bob Marley‘s ‘No Woman No Cry’.

Significance of a Nigerian and African Artist for the soundtrack of ‘Wakanda Forever’: The Black Panther franchise is based on a fictional African country ‘Wakanda’ and this carries significant sentimental and cultural value for Africans and blacks all around the world.

The soundtrack album for the first installment of Black Panther was curated by Kendrick Lamar and it featured artists such as The Weeknd, SZA, Travis Scott, Future, Khalid, School Boy Q, Jorja Smith, Swalee, and James Blake, amongst others.

The notable omission of African artists drew great criticism from Africans who felt relegated in a movie that was supposedly about them. The choice of Tems is perhaps aimed at correcting this and giving the movie more African representation.

Why Tems?: Tems is currently one of the hottest Nigerian and African artists internationally. Since she was featured on Wizkid‘s ‘Essence’, she has gone to achieve international success winning the BET for Best International Act while also featuring on Drake‘s, Future‘s albums, and more recently, Beyonce‘s album.

Tems is an artist that appeals to black audiences in America and Europe, especially among Gen Z consumers. She also has sizeable followership in Nigeria and Africa which makes her a perfect choice for an Afro-centric movie.

Tems diagnosed with Reflux Laryngitis, postpones shows

The music star made this known via her Instagram page on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. “It breaks my heart to say this but there has been no other option for me. I’m not feeling too good at the moment. After my last performance, I was diagnosed with Reflux Laryngitis and I have to take some time off to protect what’s left of my voice,” she wrote.

“On doctor’s order, I have to postpone the two shows this week. The new dates for both shows will be announced tomorrow.”

The singer apologised for the inconveniences the postponement may have caused.

Reflux laryngitis is an irritation in the back of the throat due to acid or other chemicals that come up from your stomach.

This usually happens at night when you’re asleep.

Other terms for this problem include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), acid reflux, and chronic laryngitis.

Tems gets second US Platinum Plaque with Future’s ‘Wait For U’

The announcement means that Nigerian sensation Tems who is featured on the record alongside Canadian rapper Drake will receive her second US certification.

Tems received her first Platinum plaque in October 2021 when ‘Essence’ crossed the one million sales mark.

Since achieving international fame with the success of ‘Essence,’ Tems has been featured on the albums of global superstars Drake and his long-term collaborator Future.

With her second platinum plaque, Tems will be joining Wizkid as the only other Nigerian artist with two US platinum plaques. Wizkid achieved the feat by featuring on Drake’s global hit ‘One Dance’ and his smash international hit ‘Essence’ featuring Tems.

Tems says she doesn’t think about how people will receive her music

On episode two of Tems‘ ‘Leading Vibe Radio,’ on Apple Music 1, she is joined by her manager, Muyiwa and Def Jam boss, Tunji Balogun, to explore ‘The Other Side’ of humanity as they talk self-awareness, fear, celebrity, therapy and empathy.

Here are some excerpts from the chat;

Tems On Focus, Taking Time Between Releasing Music And How People React To That

People imagine themselves to be in your position, but don’t actually understand the actual work that goes into it. So everything that they say is based off of their imagination. One thing that a lot of people never notice until now is that the first half of every single year, since I ever released music is my time to work on myself, work on my music, do everything I need to do. And in that time it seems like, “Oh my God, what’s going on?” Nothing is going on. And people start talking because everybody is scared. It looks like they have something important to say, or they have something reasonable to say, but really it’s fear.

And they’re scared for me in quotes, but if you go to the roots of that, it’s really because they’re afraid of doing what they really want to do. And they feel like, “Oh, how can this person just be chilling? What is she doing?” But you actually don’t know what I do on a daily basis. You actually don’t know how my life actually is in real life; you can’t even fathom it. And if you were me, do you know whether you’d be alive? Do you know whether you wouldn’t have done something by now? Do you know whether you would’ve handled it better than me? Because you don’t know what I’ve seen or what I’ve gone through. And a lot of this is really self-projection. Just projecting your own fears.

Tems On Whether She Thinks About How People Will Receive Her Music

Honestly, I don’t. Maybe on the day that we’re releasing it, the day of, I’ll

Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ gets certified double platinum in the US

On March 3, 2022, Nigerian singer, Wizkid‘s ‘Essence’ got certified double platinum in the US. This comes after it became the first Nigerian song to be certified platinum in the US.

An album or single is certified platinum when it moves the equivalent of two million physical sales in the US.

On October 5, 2021, it was reported that ‘Essence,’ Wizkid and Tems’ summer banger has been certified platinum in the US. It also becomes the first African song to hit that milestone.

To be clear, this is the version that features only Tems, and peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard Hot 100, not the version which features Justin Bieber, and has since peaked at No. 10 on the same chart.

‘Tems is in my top three,’ says Wizkid

On December 10, 2021, Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar, Wizkid had a conversation with Apple Music. This was meant to commemorate his Apple Music Award for Artist of the Year (Africa).

He reflects on the last 12 months, discusses the huge success of his album, Made In Lagos, explains how his life has changed since his 2011 debut and reveals his plans for 2022. As part of the show, he spoke about the success of ‘Essence’ and his admiration for Tems.

He says, “I don’t see it like that. I don’t think I’m the first through it. I don’t know what I did, but it just kicked the door open. I feel like everyone’s about to come through right now. There’s about to be loads of records from Africa. That feels good because the truth is, people are tired of listening to the same sh**. They want some real sh**.

“And during the pandemic, it kind of helped because we’re all in the house. So it helped everyone find, well for me, basically I would speak for myself. It made me understand the kind of music that I really loved to listen to more. So I feel like that just helped everyone get in touch with like, oh, yeah, man. I want to listen to some good music, what feels great?

“So when that record dropped, what it did for me was what it did for the people. It made me feel better every time I listen to the song. So it’s just a great record, man. Great record. And I love Tems to death. She’s a special, special talent. She’s like my top three.

Wizkid also thanked Apple Music for the award.

On Monday, September 20, 2021, Nigerian singer, Tems appeared on Hot 97‘s Ebro In The Morning, to discuss with Laura Stylez and Ebro Darden – who also works for Apple Music.

After some humorous reluctance during the chat, she admits that her rise has been meteoric. She also spoke about her mom’s reaction to her current success.

When she was asked about ‘Fountains‘ featuring Drake, she says, “Drake played me a beat and he was like, “Would you hop on this?”

“I was like, “Yeah, of course.” And that was basically how it went. That song was recorded [virtually]. I recorded my part in Nigeria.

When she appeared on Africa Now Radio with Lootlove, she says that, “Honestly, it’s unbelievable, literally. When I said I wanted to work with Drake, I just said it. I wasn’t thinking about it. I used to listen to Drake all the time when I was in high school and growing up and it was just the first thing that came to my mind.

“And for me to actually meet him, work with him, it’s just crazy. It’s crazy and that’s a full testament to God’s blessings, honestly. I can’t quantify how grateful I am, because it’s not anything I did, I’m just making music. And it just seems like I’m attracting all these people and I’m just so grateful honestly.

She also spoke about her EP, IF ORANGE WAS A PLACE and how it would be different from her album.

She says, “The album is going to be a different thing, definitely. I don’t do the same… I’m someone who likes to do new things all the time.. I have so many experiences that I need to release through my songs. Definitely all new…
