Romelu Lukaku Returns to Chelsea

One of the most prolific strikers in European football, Lukaku has returned to the club he supported as a young boy and where he has unfinished business, having been on our books between 2011 and 2014. The Belgian has signed a five-year contract and will add attacking firepower to Thomas Tuchel’s squad of European champions.

‘I’m happy and blessed to be back at this wonderful club,’ said Lukaku. ‘It’s been a long journey for me: I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I’m coming back with a lot of experience and more mature.

‘The relationship I have with this club means so much to me, as you know. I have supported Chelsea as a kid and now to be back and try to help them win more titles is an amazing feeling.

The way the club is going fits my ambitions perfectly at 28 and just coming off winning Serie A. I think this opportunity comes at the right time and hopefully we can have a lot of success together.

‘Since I left Chelsea, it’s been a long journey with a lot of ups and downs, but these experiences made me strong and the challenge is to try to help the team win some more trophies. I can’t wait to get started and to help the club achieve more success.’

Aged just 18 when he arrived at Stamford Bridge from Anderlecht in his homeland in the summer of 2011, he made 15 Chelsea appearances in three seasons, two of which were largely spent on loan, before moving on to Everton, Manchester United and Inter Milan. While at Inter, Lukaku was named the Europa League Player of the Season in 2019/20, before playing an integral part as the Italian side won Serie A last season. His 24 goals and 11 assists earned him the competition’s MVP award.

Now 28, he was named in UEFA’s team of the tournament for Euro 2020, during which he netted four times in Belgium’s run to the quarter-finals, where they …

IPOB threatens monarchs

The Indigenous People of Biafra has threatened to deal with traditional rulers, presidents general and youth leaders of communities who report their subjects to security operatives as members of its Eastern Security Network.

The group issued the threat in a statement made available to newsmen by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, on Thursday.

It said: “We have got reports of traditional rulers and president generals and youths leaders who terrorize youths in their community by tagging them IPOB members and ESN operatives.

“The only crime of the youths is standing up for their rights and resisting the sale of community land to Fulani herdsmen.

It’s an abomination for a traditional ruler and president general in Biafraland to report youths in his communities to terror-friendly Nigeria Army just because he feels the youths are standing in his way to sell the community’s land to the Fulani herders.

“We, therefore, warn all such treacherous monarchs to retrace their steps or brace up for the consequences of their evil action.

“We want to sound it clear that henceforth, any traditional ruler that reports his subjects to the Nigeria Army or Navy to torture them for opposing their plans to sell community land to Fulani herdsmen shall get ready to answer to our ancestors.

“Such evil traitors are not worthy to live how much more occupy the titleship stool in Biafra land.”

In a particular instance, IPOB gave a seven-day ultimatum to monarchs in Atani and other communities in Ogbaru, Anambra State to facilitate the unconditional release all the youths arrested in the area by the Nigeria Navy.…

‘You can be whatever you want to be’ has led many to their untimely death’ – Williams Uchemba

Nollywood actor Williams Uchemba has objected to the popular quote ‘You can be whatever you want to be.

According to the movie star in a lengthy post shared via his Instagram page on Tuesday, August 11, 2021, said that quote has led many people to their untimely death.

“One of the biggest lies I believed all my life, and till date still see people make the same mistake, is the lie that YOU CAN BE WHATEVER YOU WANT TO BE. This sentence has led so many people to their untimely death, frustration and hopelessness,” he wrote.

“Imagine telling a sofa you can be a fridge or a fridge you can be a bed if you believe. Before the manufacturer of the sofa even started manufacturing it, he already knew the purpose of the sofa and the problem it would solve. The manufacture finished the product in his mind even before he started.”

The philanthropist went on to say that every individual on earth was created for a different purpose but, the biggest problem they face is how to discover their purpose.

He advised people trying to find their identity to be what God wants them to be and not what they want to be.

Global trends
Overall, the index shows advances in youth’s participation in peace processes and their education, employment, inclusion and health care since 2010.

Health made the largest gains of 4.39 per cent driven by a 1.6 per cent decline in global youth mortality rates and a 2 per cent drop in each HIV, self-harm, alcohol abuse and tobacco use.

Pat McCormack insists he and twin Luke will become world champions as pro boxers after Olympic adventure

Pat McCormack: “Olympic medalists make very, very good pros so I’m looking forward to what the future brings. I’ve waited a long time to turn professional. With Covid-19 knocking back the Olympics, I should have been pro by now. I feel like my apprenticeship is done.” Pat McCormack brought home a silver medal as part of Team GB’s boxers’ record six-medal haul from Tokyo 2020.

“It will take a few years to build into, but if you’re not aiming for a world title then there’s no pointing being in the game.”

He reflected on the professional successes of the 2016 Olympians: “They have done unbelievably. Lawrence Okolie is world champion which couldn’t be any better. Joshua Buatsi is pushing on for a world title.

McCormack fell short of Olympic gold in the welterweight final against the veteran Cuban Roniel Iglesias, who became a back-to-back gold medalist and was competing at his fourth Games.

“It’s a bit disappointing that it wasn’t a gold medal,” he said. “That’s what I came for. Now that the dust has settled, I am proud of it.

“I’ve medaled at the World Championships, European Championships, Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.

“This was the last medal on the list and I’m ready for what’s next.

“I felt the pressure. I stayed on since Rio so I knew that I’d have to get a medal or it would have been a waste of five years.”

His twin brother Luke was also eliminated by a brilliant Cuban, Andy Cruz, in the lightweight round of 16.

Pat said about Luke: “His dream was never to go to the Olympics. But I was going so he thought: ‘I may as well go!’

“His dream was always to be a professional world champion.

“He’s got a great style for the pros – he has good punching power.

Minister sets up panel to probe disqualification of 10 Nigerian athletes in Tokyo

Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, has set up a panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disqualification of 10 Nigerian athletes at the just concluded Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Team Nigeria finished in the 74th position on the overall table and sixth best in Africa with a silver and a bronze medal at the end of the Games. The country’s participation was nearly marred by controversies arising from disqualification of athletes over non-compliance with anti-doing rules and the provisional suspension placed on Nigeria’s top sprinter, Blessing Okagbare.

“I have ordered a full investigation that will not only uncover what happened, but will also recommend a process where such lapses can never occur in the future and initiate leveraging compliance monitoring technology to guardrail this,” Dare stated yesterday in a press release made available to The Guardian. He continues: “First is the mishap resulting in 10 Team Nigeria athletes being ruled ineligible to compete for missing their mandatory Out of Competition Test (OTC). When notice of this ruling got to me, I immediately mobilized my team and the AFN leadership to see how the situation could be salvaged. We mounted a vigorous appeal process with Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) and had the team members complete the tests. However, timing became the critical issue. Despite our energetic appeal, the deciding committee made its announcement, which gave no latitude to our team members for what was only an inadvertent lapse.

Dare accepted “some institutional responsibility for this lapse,” adding, however, “I also had to depend and expect that each person, in the long and often technical chain, will perform their role expeditiously, and with precision. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line someone failed in their responsibility and as minister, I bear the responsibility and brunt of criticism. But that is not enough. I must move to ensure that Nigeria never experiences another such moment.

“I have personally apologized to the affected athletes. Here and now, I personally apologize to all Nigerians for this ineligibility episode. The AFN has also taken responsibility and apologized to the …

Things between the two lovebirds went south after Angel kissed Kayvee during their truth or dare game.

Sammie didn’t find it funny as he made his disapproval known to his friends in the house.

“I should be jealous of course. She touched somebody. You don’t even know this guy from nowhere. He only came in yesterday. She should have touched Saga or Boma,” he said.

Things took a different turn after Angel confronted the Kaduna State-born filmmaker for slut-shaming her.

“Go for your Ideal woman. You have been slut-shaming me. I heard you.” she told him.

US court postpones trial of suspended Abiodun’s aide to 2022

The fraud trial of suspended aide to Ogun Governor Abidemi Rufai, who was indicted for alleged conspiracy, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, has been postponed to 2022.

A fresh ruling of the court has postponed the commencement of Rufai’s trial by five months.

Rufai was arrested at the JFK airport in New York on May 14 over alleged $350,000 COVID-19 unemployment fraud in the United States.

The Nation had reported the prosecutor submitted 97,000-page materials at the US District for the Western District of Washington at Tacoma, on July 26. The indictment alleges that Rufai used the stolen identities of more than 100 Washington residents to file fraudulent claims with the Employment Security Department (ESD) for pandemic-related unemployment benefits.

Acting US Attorney Tessa M. Gorman had said Rufai filed fraudulent unemployment claims with Hawaii, Wyoming, Massachusetts, Montana, New York, and Pennsylvania, using variations of a single email address in a manner intended to evade automatic detection by fraud systems.

The trial, earlier scheduled to commence on August 31, has now been postponed to February 1, 2022.

The new trial date is based on agreement between the prosecution and the defense, describing the case as “unusual and complex”.

Judge Benjamin Settle of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, at Tacoma said pretrial motions “shall be filed no later than December 9, 2021”, and fixed pretrial conference for January 24, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.…

Super TV boss Ataga murder: Court sends Chidinma to prison for 30 days

A Yaba Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded Chidinma Ojukwu, prime suspect in the murder of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, for 30 days.

Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo made the order following an application by police counsel Cyril Ejiofor.

Adedayo also remanded Ojukwu’s co-defendant Adedapo Quadri on the same terms.

Ejiofor had prayed the court to remand Ojukwu in police custody pending the issuance of a Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) report on the matter. “The remand is to enable the DPP come up with legal advice. We pray for the remand of the defendants for the first 30 days in the first instance,” he said.

Director, Office of the Public Defender (OPD) Dr Babajide Martins, who announced appearance for Chidinma, complained the prosecution failed to furnish the defense with the remand application.

Nevertheless, he declined to oppose Ejiofor’s prayer “in principle.”

“I have just been privileged to get a copy of the remand application.

“I have not been able to go through it, my learned friend’s application is inevitable, I would have been happier, if I was obliged of the application earlier.

“The application will not be opposed, in principle,” Martins said.

Quadri had no legal representation.

In a bench ruling, Adedayo granted the prosecution’s prayer.

She held: “In the absence of any opposition, the two defendants are hereby remanded for 30 days in the first instance.

“The case is adjourned till September 5, for review of remand/DPP’s advice.”

Ojukwu, a 21-year-old Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos, was arrested by the police on June 23, 2021.

She was said to have been in a romantic relationship with 50-year-old Ataga for about four months before the incident.

Following her parade by the police on June 24, the undergraduate said she and Ataga were “having fun” when an argument broke out and she stabbed him twice.

On June 29, she pleaded for forgiveness saying she was not ready to die.

She attributed her action to influence of hard drugs and smoking.
