PDP, Atiku Condemn ‘Impeachment Notice’ On Gov. Ortom

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has deplored the purported service of impeachment notice on Benue Governor, Dr Samuel Ortom, by eight members of the House of Assembly.

The party made this known in a communique issued after the end of an emergency meeting of its National Working Committee on Monday in Abuja, and described the development as illegal.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, who read communique, said “The NWC condemns in its entirety the purported sitting of eight APC members, including the impeached and suspended Speaker”.

He added: “This purported happened in a 30-member House, wherein they illegally claimed to have served an impeachment notice on the Governor of Benue, Dr Samuel Ortom.”
The PDP, according Ologbondiyan, also condemned the use of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Department of State Security to harass and intimidate officials of Benue Government.

He added that the PDP noted the roles played by APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, the Federal Government and Senator George Akume in encouraging the action he described as “lawless and anarchy in the state”.
He said that Oshiomhole’s actions and opinions over Ortom defection to PDP and the deployment of policemen to force the purported issuance of illegal impeachment notice were intended to precipitate crisis in the state.
Ologbondiyan said that the plan was for there to be crisis in the state and warrant the declaration of state-of-emergency.

He said: “It is on record that the erstwhile speaker had been impeached, suspended and restrained by a court of competent jurisdiction from parading himself as speaker.
“In spite of this, it is shocking that no fewer than 300 policemen were alleged to have escorted the impeached speaker to the House of Assembly to initiate a
disgraceful and manifestly illegal process.

“Our party warns against deliberate acts which were maliciously designed to truncate democracy by employing underhand tactics to achieve what is inconceivable in a democracy.
“The party calls on Nigerians, civil society organizations and International Community to note series of plots and deliberate attempts by the …

Diamond Bank Plc has strengthened its retail business segment with digital customers of three million for the second quarter ended June 30, 2018.

Uzoma Dozie, the bank’s Chief Executive Officer, on Monday attributed the milestone to its digital penetration strategy with strong focus on the Nigerian market.

Uzoma noted that customers’ loan volume decreased by 3.6 per cent to N728.7 billion as maturities exceeded new loans during the period.

How We Started Zenith Bank With N20m — Ovia

The Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, Jim Ovia, has advised budding entrepreneurs not to be dissuaded by whatever challenges they might be facing presently, just as he narrated how he founded a bank with N20 million in 1990, despite the uncertain business environment during the military era.
Speaking in an interview on Bloomberg TV at the weekend, about his new book: “Africa Rise And Shine: How a Nigerian Entrepreneur from Humble Beginnings Grew a Business to $16 billion,” Ovia urged entrepreneurs to be responsive to opportunities lurking around.
Specifically, Ovia advised foreign investors not to be deterred by negative news and commentaries about Africa.
He explained: “We started the business with N20 million at an exchange rate of N5 to a dollar. So, we actually started the business with $4 million in 1990, and it has now blossomed.
“We now have a total asset base of $16 billion. If you look at the arithmetic, there have been over 1000 per cent growth. You can’t get that anywhere. Even in the best economies in the world, you are not going to get that type of benefit.
“So, that is the kind of risk entrepreneurs, businesses or international investors must take in Nigeria or any other African country and reap tremendously in terms of quantum growth in their business.”
According to Ovia, just as he saw opportunities in the banking sector at the time Zenith Bank was set up, there were other opportunities that some other persons had in other industries.
“It was a matter of time and chance,” he insisted.
“Time and chance at that time because at that time, many people were scared to invest in Nigeria. We are talking about late 80s and to be precise, in 1990, many international investors were scared to invest, simply because we were under military rule.
“So, you could imagine the tremendous opportunities that existed in Nigeria and some other African countries, but because we were indigenous people, we knew that it meant nothing.
“We had lived through that and we knew it

Drip…drip…drip…

Osas carefully positioned containers around his room to collect rain water dripping in from the roof. He lay in the dark quietly, pondering and insentiently counting the drops.

…31…32…33…

At 11:37pm on this Friday night, the rains poured insanely. The wind howled like wild animals bent on pulling the roof off its joints. Even the overgrown tree by the fence was busy scratching its branches eerily on his window, casting creepy shadows on the wall with every flash of lightning.

The curtain took strange forms in the dark, making him jumpy. Using the light from his phone for illumination, he slithered over to correct this but his leg clumsily hit the empty cooking pots neatly arranged by the wall and sent them crashing in a loud racket.

“Ah…” Osas hissed loudly “…see me now”!

When the din calmed, he quietly rearranged the pots, straightened the curtain, then reached for the remaining ijebu-garri he’d collected on credit days before from Mama Iyabo. Until he paid up all he owed, she told him, “no more credit”.

“Lagos, is the land of opportunities” he’d been told, but two years now and Lagos seemed to be hiding that side of her from him. Why…who did he offend…who?

He’d recently gone to his bank for business funding, but they asked him for collateral. Where was a start-up like him to get ‘collateral’? So, he suggested they use him as collateral, he didn’t mind. He would even donate his blood if they needed ink, but the annoying bank official only smirked “I am sorry Mr. Osas…” she said in conclusion, “…it’s the bank’s policy”.

“But is it your money”? He desperately wanted to scream, common sense advised otherwise. So, he was back on the streets yet again, hustling. “Who de follow me na”? He questioned.

A crack of lightning brought his mind back to the present. He stirred the ijebu-garri, ready to drink, when he heard a shuffle of quick steps end at his door. Ah, the devil himself! Osas thought. His heart climbed up …
