Tanker Explosion: Lagos To Prosecute Truck Owner, Driver

The Lagos State Government is perfecting plans to prosecute the owner and driver of the ill-fated lagos tanker explosion, which exploded last Thursday on Otedola Bridge inward Ojodu Berger along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said on Monday.
Already, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Adeniji Kazeem, had at the weekend written to the CP to advice him on the relevant provisions of the law that could guide the ongoing investigation, which would lead to possible prosecution. to avoid what happened at the Lagos Tanger Explosion
Confirming receipt of the letter while briefing Government House Correspondents after the Security Council Meeting chaired by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Imohimi said investigations into the incident were ongoing, adding that government would not allow vehicles that pose serious danger to residents on the road.
The police chief, who briefed journalists alongside heads of other security agencies in the State, commiserated with those who lost their loved ones to the tragic incident, while also commending emergency responders who quickly raced to the scene to keep the causality figure low.
Imohimi said: “As regards investigation into the matter, it is in top gear. I have just received a letter from the office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice which stated very clearly charges which we are going to prefer against the driver and the owner of that tanker.
“Henceforth, we are using this opportunity to call on all tanker drivers, all lorry drivers, all owners of such articulated vehicles to please submit those vehicles for Vehicle Inspection Office test; they must go through the entire hub and get the Ministry of Transportation Certificate of Road Worthiness. We will not allow such vehicles which obviously pose serious danger to other road users on our roads.”
Imohimi said government had already directed security agencies to intensify enforcement of relevant laws, especially the State Traffic Law, with the view to ensuring that the roads and highways in the State were safe for commuters to ply without any danger.

2,900 French Policemen In Manhunt For Thief Who Escaped From Prison With Helicopter

An extensive manhunt involving some 2,900 police officers has been launched in France to track the 46-year-old career thief Redoine Faid, who staged the most audacious jailbreak in recent time: escaping prison by helicopter.
The manhunt was launched Monday as details emerged of the daring prison escape, by the notorious robber, who said he drew inspiration from characters in movies such as “Scarface”.
The escape by the convict, dubbed the “Jailbreak King” by French media, having already broken out of prison in 2013, has raised questions about security at French jails.
Faid was sprung from his prison in Reau, 50 kilometres (30 miles) southeast of Paris, on Sunday by two heavily armed accomplices who used smoke bombs and angle grinders to break through doors and whisk him to a waiting helicopter.
The escape brings to at least five the number of jailbreaks in France in the past three decades involving helicopters.
Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet told Europe 1 radio that she had sent inspectors to the prison “to see whether the security measures were defective so that we can rectify them”.
Belloubet suggested that Faid had been left in the same prison for too long, giving the career criminal, who has said he found his “calling” at the age of 12, time to plot his escape.
Sunday’s drama began at an airfield northeast of Paris where two men posing as flight school students hijacked a helicopter and ordered the instructor to fly them to Reau prison, stopping off en route to pick up a third accomplice.
On arrival at the high-security facility, the pilot landed in the courtyard — the only part of the prison not fitted with anti-helicopter nets.
Two black-clad men armed with assault rifles then alighted and set off smoke bombs before breaking into the visiting room, where Faid was meeting with his brother who was later taken into custody.
The wardens, who were unarmed, fled and raised the alarm.
But within 10 minutes Faid was gone, cheered on by his fellow inmates.
The helicopter was found …

July 14: Ekiti People Will Resist Rigging – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has said nobody can rig the July 14, 2018 Ekiti State governorship election despite the alleged machination by the All Progressives Congress working with some compromised Independent National Electoral Commission officials and security agencies.
The PDP restated that the will of the people is stronger than the machinations of evil-minded persons toying with the determination of the people for a free and fair electioneering.
The party warned that INEC officials working with agents of the APC to compromise the process are brazenly risking the legitimate wrath of the people of Ekiti State in their iron-cast resolve to ensure that nobody subverts their will in this election.
It said: “The people of Ekiti state are already aware of the clandestine meetings between known INEC officials and APC agents, including those held at the Ondo state Government House, Akure, where plots were hatched to use INEC’s ICT Department to preload card readers and input false results, as well as cloning unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to superimpose pictures of their members from other states.
“The PDP cautions these compromised INEC officers, their allies in the APC and those they planned to import from other states, to note that their tracks and footprints are all bare and that the people of Ekiti state are already at alert and ready to stop them on their trails with every potency available to them under the law.
“What the APC and their cohorts in INEC fail to note is that Ekiti is a contiguous state where every indigene and residents know and can identify one another other as individuals and families and that as such there is no way in which strangers imported from other states can be allowed to sneak in and participate in their election.
“Let it be known to all that the PDP is fully mobilized for the July 14 election. The people of Ekiti state are fully rallied to vigilance at every polling unit, every collation center as well as every exit and entry points in their respective

Ekiti Gubernatorial: We Will Not Disappoint Nigerians — INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commissioner on Monday said the hopes and expectations of Nigerians on the Ekiti gubernatorial election which comes up in two week time will not be dashed.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the commission’s top officials, on a visit to the state, gave the assurance in Ado Ekiti, saying there would be no room for failure in the poll.
The INEC National Commissioner in charge of Ekiti, Osun and Oyo states, Solomon Soyebi, and his counterpart in charge of Election Operations and Logistics, Amina Zakari, gave the declaration at a Pre-Election Preparation workshop organised for Electoral Officers, Assistant Electoral Officers and Head of Departments.
Soyebi said the workshop was to tidy up things as every polling unit must be opened by 7am.
He said: “There will be no room for excuses. Any Local Government where this happen, the Electoral Office will be responsible.
“You must share responsibilities with your assistants to avoid one-man show. You must also watch your utterances so as to safeguard the integrity of the exercise.”
Also speaking, Zakari debunked an allegation by Governor Ayo Fayose that she had been hired by the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to rig the election in favour of APC.
She challenged the governor and the Peoples Democratic Party to back their allegations with evidence, saying it was not possible for an individual to rig an election.
She said: “They should prove that beyond reasonable doubt. I doubt it if an individual can rig an election when there are over 20,000 personnel to conduct the election.
“They should back their allegation with fact and figures. We (INEC) have nothing to hide. I see no reason why INEC would want to go back to bad old days. We are moving forward as we remained focused  to ensure a credible election that Nigeria will be proud of.”
Zakari said the workshop would review work done so far and to expose officials to new ideas, processes and approach to a successful conduct of the election.…
