Atiku Pledges To Open National Economy To Generate Income, Employment

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday said he would open Nigeria’s economy to foreign investments to generate income and employment if given the mandate to rule in 2019.
Abubakar, who is one of the presidential aspirants on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, disclosed this while addressing the Kogi State leadership of the party and delegates at the party’s secretariat in Lokoja.
The former Vice President said he would open up the economy to attract foreign investors and turn the nation’s economy around to generate incomes and employment.
He said: “I will diversify the economy, open it up to provide safety for local and foreign investors.”
The presidential aspirant urged the National Assembly to act fast and ensure the use of card reader in the 2019 General Elections to ensure free and fair election.
He expressed confidence that the National Assembly would do the right thing by including it in the electoral law.
On insinuations of frosty relationship between him and his former boss, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Abubakar said there was no serious rift between them.
He said people magnified little things to suite their interest.…

Minimum Wage: Workers Back NLC Over 14-Day Ultimatum

The Nigerian workers on Thursday thrown their weight behind the 14-day ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress to the Federal Government over delay regarding new minimum wage.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Labour leaders had on Wednesday cautioned the Federal Government against foot-dragging on the new minimum wage and allow the tripartite committee to conclude its job to avoid action.
The labour leaders, who are members of the Minimum Wage Committee at a joint news conference addressed in Lagos, gave the Federal Government 14 days to ensure that the committee conclude its work or be ready to face action.
The President, Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, had said that the committee was not pleased with the comments allegedly made by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige.
Ngige had last week said that the committee should adjourn indefinitely to give room for further consultations with the government.
He said: “We view his supposed pronouncement with great concern, suspicion and outrage.
“This new antic certainly is not acceptable to Nigerian workers, who had expected a New National Minimum Wage since 2016.’’
However, some of the workers, who spoke with NAN on Thursday in Abuja expressed disappointment over the way and manner government was handling the issue.
Salisu Umar, a civil servant, berated the Federal Government for obvious lack of concern to the plight of workers.
He said it would be outright lack of feelings for Nigerian workers not to heed the call for increased wage in the face of harsh economy.
Umar called on the NLC not to rest on its oars in the pursuit of a new minimum wage, adding that whatever action the union resolved to take to press home their demand would receive the support of workers.
Another worker, Dorcas Abulu, called on the NLC to put the Federal Government on its toe until the national new minimum wage was approved.
She noted that prices of goods and services had skyrocketed, adding that workers could hardly afford the basic needs of life …

Osaka Not Saddened By Serena Row In US Open Final

Naomi Osaka said Serena Williams’s row with the umpire during the US Open final had not altered her feelings about winning a Grand Slam.
She said on Thursday that this was largely because she had no idea how she was supposed to react.
Osaka’s breakthrough triumph in New York was overshadowed by an explosive row between her opponent Williams and umpire Carlos Ramos which resulted in the 23-times Grand Slam champion being docked a game and fined 17,000 dollars.
At Flushing Meadows on Saturday, the 20-year-old world number seven was reduced to tears during the presentation ceremony but on her arrival back in Japan on Thursday, she said she had not been saddened by the incident.
“For me, I don’t feel sad because I wouldn’t even know what I’m expected to feel,” she told a news conference in Yokohama.
She added: “Because it was my first final and my first Grand Slam victory, overall I felt really happy and I know that I accomplished a lot.
“I don’t think I even thought about feeling sad because there’s no experience for me to draw on (from) any other Grand Slam final.”
One of the most controversial Grand Slam finals of all time divided tennis and triggered a debate about sexism in the sport, fuelled by Williams’s assertion that Ramos would not have dealt with a male player in the same way.
Much of the criticism of Williams has centred on how her actions had spoilt a precious moment for Osaka, who was even moved to apologise for beating the home favourite to a New York crowd angrily booing Ramos.…

Omoyele Sowore To Pay N100,000 As Minimum Wage If Elected In 2019

Sowore, a presidential aspirant of African Action Congress (AAC), says he will ensure civil servants in the country receive N100,000 as minimum wage from 2019 if he is elected Nigeria’s president.

Speaking at a town hall meeting organised by the party in Badagry, Sowore said Nigerians were indirectly going into slavery by traveling to different countries in search of jobs.

He noted that over 43 million black Africans were sold into slavery in the coastal city about 400 years ago, a development he said was still happening indirectly because of lack of job.

“I am in politics to stop this by providing 500,000 jobs yearly.

“The minimum wage for civil servant will be N100,000 from 2019,” he said.

Sowore regretted the poor state of roads in the country and describing the Lagos-Badagry expressway as the worst in Nigeria.

The presidential aspirants said the historic town had been cut off from the rest of the country due to deplorable state of the expressway.

“I have traveled all over Nigeria, but I have not seen any international expressway like Lagos-Badagry.

“We spent almost five hours coming here instead of one and half hours.

“Badagry town has been cut-off from Nigeria due to deplorable state of the road.

“This is very shameful,” the presidential aspirant said.

He promised to construct two expressways from Badagry to Lagos, and another one linking Badagry and Ogun State if elected into power in the 2019 general elections.

Sowore urged the residents of Badagry to vote wisely for candidates of their choice.

“I heard now that politicians are buying Permanent Voters Card (PVC) for N10,000. Please don’t sell your PVC; the PVC is your future.

“Can you do any business with N10,000? They will buy your card; your future is your PVC; keep it,” he said.…

MI Abaga Reveals Battled With Emotional Issues

Famous rapper, MI might be one of the boldest and most outspoken rappers around but he too has a weak side as he just revealed how he battled with emotional and personal self-esteem issues as an entertainer.

The rapper made this latest revelation on his Instagram page. According to him, he isn’t afraid to share his fears with fans and he hopes that it will free someone to share their fears too.

MI who recently dropped a new album ‘Yung Denzel’ wrote;“Daily… I’m afraid of failure… I’m afraid of abandonment… I have battled with personal self-esteem issues… people are sometimes afraid until it becomes unbearable. I’m not afraid to share some of my fears with you guys in the hope that it will free someone to share their fears too… if you have something to share… let’s meet in the comments. Good morning”.

MI now joins a growing list of Nigerian entertainers who have all come out to reveal their battle with emotional and psychological issues.

Now is this a trend or just mere coincidence that celebrities are now coming out to talk about the personal things they have been going through. Depression is one major topic that has been on the front burner for a few months now.

The list of celebrities who have come out to talk about how they got depressed and were able to get over it seems to be on the increase. From Owen Gee, Waje, Niniola, Betty Irabor , Samklef and most recently, Harrysong, obviously the topic of depression can no longer be treated as a white man’s ailment.…

Pilot Faints Mid-Air During Violent Thunderstorm

A Ryanair pilot fainted while a plane was being diverted and had to be rushed to hospital upon landing.

The plane was flying from London Stansted to Palermo in Italy on Thursday evening but had to land 67 miles away in Trapani due to thunderstorms in the area.

The co-pilot then passed out near the airport and the captain was forced to land the plane himself.

A source told The Sun Online the first officer was “not able to function” and was taken to hospital after being examined by medical staff.

Ryanair confirmed the staff member “briefly fainted” as the plane was landing and was released from hospital after being assessed by doctors.

They added that the reason the flight was diverted was due to thunderstorms over Palermo not any issues with the crew.

Ryanair said in a statement: “The first officer on this flight briefly fainted while the aircraft was being landed by the captain at Trapani.

“He was examined by local medical staff and taken to hospital, where he was examined and released shortly thereafter without suffering any ill effects whatsoever.”

Abramovich Plots To Sell Chelsea For £2b

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has hired New York bank Raine Group in preparation for selling off the club, according to The Sunday Times.
The bank is said to have valued the club at £2 billion and Chelsea have engaged their advisors after they helped Manchester City sell a 13 per cent stake in the club to China Media Capital for £265 million in 2015.

It is unclear whether they would look for new owners or to sell a stake in the club which Abramovich bought for £140 million in 2003 but the move comes at a critical time for Chelsea, who look overwhelmed by the scale of the wealth of clubs such as Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain.

In May, following the political sanctions Great Britain imposed on Russia in response to the Salisbury poisoning, Chelsea announced that Abramovich was putting off a proposed £500 million expansion of Stamford Bridge.

They have failed to qualify for the Champions League for the second time in three years, having previously qualified for the competition every year since Abramovich took over.
They have also still to convince Eden Hazard to sign a new contract or risk having to sell him to Real Madrid next summer when he will have just one more year on his deal.
Chelsea need to rebuild the team under new manager Maurizio Sarri after having allowed talents such as Mo Salah, Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku to leave the club in recent years.
Chelsea have enjoyed a long spell of success since Abramovich completed his takeover in the summer of 2003.

They became the first London club to the win the Champions League in 2012, as well as earning five of their six league titles in this period.
However more inconsistent league finishes recently and the rise of uber-rich Man City have ended this dominant period.

Owen: I Hated Football Late In My Career

Michael Owen has said that injuries had left him “petrified” and made him hate playing football toward the end of his career.
Owen scored 262 goals in 571 career appearances for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Manchester United, Stoke City and England.
He first suffered a torn hamstring at the age of 19, forcing him to spend five months on the sidelines, and a series of similar injuries seriously affected the second half of his career.
“Once I did it once I was gone really,” Owen told BT Sport. “I was quick, running in channels, beating people. That’s who I was — compared to the last six or so years when I turned into the only thing I could.

“I was petrified of running into a channel. I just knew I was going to tear a muscle. The worst thing about it is your instinct is to do what you have done all your life but you start thinking: ‘Oh no, don’t.’”
Michael Owen during a Soccer Aid match. Photo by Dave J Hogan/Injuries took their long-term toll on Owen, who admitted he could not play as the same kind of forward that he did early in his career.
“For six or seven years I hated it,” he added. “I couldn’t wait to retire.
“It wasn’t me. All I was doing is coming short, linking play and getting in the box. It ended up with people thinking I was a great goal scorer who didn’t do much else. Mentally I could do it, but physically I couldn’t.
“I admire people who can play for the love of the game. They may lose a yard of pace and they can go down a division or play against lesser teams — but, for me, it was turmoil.”

D’Tigress Need Extra Focus For Women’s World Cup

D’Tigress point guard, Ezinne Kalu, has demanded extra focus from her teammates as they start the second phase of their camping in Lagos on Monday in preparation for the 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup.
The 26-year-old, who plays for Vasa Akademia in the Hungarian league, said their mission in Lagos is to finish the second phase on a high note in time for World Cup in Spain.
She said: “I expect everybody to have a solid focus.
“We are ready to finish the second part of camp and get a solid defence going.
“I expect that everybody will come in and stay focused because the second phase of the camp is the most important.”
According to the former co-captain of the team, going by the statistics of the friendlies played during the first phase of their camping in Atlanta, the team’s offence has been great.

Kalu expects that they can always get better with more warm up games lined up by the Nigeria Basketball Federation.
The 26-year-old, who played a pivotal role in D’Tigress’ emergence as African Champions in 2017, while speaking on arrival in Lagos, said putting on the national team’s jersey and representing millions of Nigerians comes with a bit of pressure on any player, which for her is normal.
She said: “I do feel the pressure but at the same time, I know that my team has got my back.
“They can trust me and I can trust them and help me keep being a leader.”
Despite the recent appointment of Adaora Elonu as captain, Kalu said she will continue to play her leadership role on the court and give her best to bring glory to Nigeria anytime she steps on the court.
“As a point guard, I have to be a leader on the floor, talk my teammates through and communicate,” she concluded.

Police Forced Jonathan To Concede Defeat In 2015 — Former IGP

Former Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has disclosed that the police forced the then President Goodluck Jonathan to concede defeat and congratulate the then President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, Daily Trust is reporting.
Jonathan, who flew the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party, had while the results of the election were still being announced by the then Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, conceded defeat and congratulated Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

He told the newspaper: “Thank God that in our own case, we forced those who lost elections to accept the results.
“The Nigeria Police forced those who lost elections to accept the outcome.
“I said the Nigeria Police, I didn’t say Suleiman Abba.

“The heroes of that election should have been the police.”
Jonathan had since then been claiming accolades for his decision to accept defeat.
He had on several occasions described himself as a true democrat for the move.

The Lagos State Government says work is in progress to integrate the rail, road and water transport systems to address the persistent gridlocks in the state.
The state’s Commissioner for Transport, Ladi Lawanson, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Sunday.

Lawanson said: “In order to get everything right, the state government implementing a master plan to integrate the major transportation systems to ensure free flow of traffic and curb incessant gridlocks.
“The transportation master plan involves the three major modes of transportation: the rail, road and water.
“For the road transport, work is going on to ensure the transportation sector is transformed to the modern system which is practised globally.

“The road system has the Bus Rapid Transit which we have been using for a while and the state served as the operator.
“We were running it like that until we found out that the method was not suitable because government, to be frank, has no business to be in a business.
“Rather, the government has decided to opt out and now be a regulator.”
Lawanson also said the state government was committed to ensuring the safety of the people using the waterways as their means of transportation within the state.
According to him, to tackle emergencies on the waterways more efficiently, the Lagos State government is to procure life-saving, quick response boats.

He said: “The state government is working on bringing ideals and best practices on water transportation as the sub-sector requires millions dollars of investment, if we are to do it right.
“We are going to procure life-saving boats, top speed boats and quick response boats such that, anytime there is an emergency, we will rescue promptly without recording any casualty.
“The government also distributes free life jackets to jetties periodically to save lives on waterways.
